Mets Mount Rushmore Monday: The Mount Rushmore of Mets Infielders

Mets Mount Rushmore Monday is a new series of filler posts.  On Monday I will declare The Mount Rushmore Of….  and name four names.

Today, it’s the Mount Rushmore of Mets Infielders.  Infielders play 1B, 2B, SS and 3B.   They do not catch.  Those are called catchers.  They do not pitch.  They are called pitchers.

Ready?

KEITH HERNANDEZ

EDGARDO ALFONZO

BUD HARRELSON

DAVID WRIGHT

Let’s break it down.  I didn’t specifically set out to do one infielder at each position, but it naturally worked out.

The corners are pretty easy.  I’m confident you’ve heard of David Wright, and Keith Hernandez is the only person on the planet who has been a Captain and won a World Series as a Met. (I wish Gary Carter were here too).

For the infield….younger fans don’t realize what a major figure Bud Harrelson was.  There was a time when he was the no doubt second most popular Mets player.  .234 with 6 HRs in 13 Mets seasons (and I mean six not 13×6) may not make sense to 21st Century eyes, but Buddy is the SS on this team.  There might have been a case for others, but there’s no domestic violence on my mountain.

Finally, the 4th spot was a bit of a struggle so I went with Fonzie.  Good guy, nice stats, played on a pennant winner.    I guess we could argue Ed Kranepool…maybe..possibly….but I like how it settled with one IFer for each position, which makes for a nice mountain.
