Sterling or Scully: Mixed bag from Gary Cohen on Pete Alonso’s Mets record breaker…stay with me

Look I know I am going to get killed for this but what else is new.

The actual call here is GREAT.  Truly loved it.  It was a monster shot and Gary called it like it was a 1200 foot home run.   Everything great there.

Verdict: Scully.

But then after the pause….Gary went into what sounds like his pre-written Announcer Speech This Is A Big Moment And I Must Be Prepared which is never good.  Always do a natural call.  I did not like the I Hereby Pronounce This A Huge Historical Moment to be a cool thing.  I won’t Sterling it, but it didn’t float my boat.  It was try-hard.

Now compare that to this clip. Joe Buck, rarely compared to Vin Scully, learned well from his father and let this moment breaaaaaaaaatttthhhhe. Sometimes saying NOTHING is better Gary. Seriously, I won’t spoil it, but watch this clip and you will not believe how long Joe says nothing, before speaking naturally once he does.

Also, me being me, I need to point out that there was all sorts of illegal fraternization while in uniform! I hope baseball fined people. Also McGwire clearly fraternized with fans in the stands. Illegal.

And finally…#NoSnitching.
