Those of you with fancy SF Chronicle subscriptions can read that
Matt Harvey had an out in his minor-league deal with the A’s on Thursday, but he has decided to stay with the team – and the longtime starter, an All-Star with the Mets, might wind up a bullpen option in Oakland. (SF Chronicle)
The gang at MLB Trade Rumors adds
The longtime starter is open to the idea, replaying he is “gonna give it the shot” in a text message to the Chronicle.
My take: TDK realizes the walls are closing in, and with no better options, sure he will pitch in the bullpen. As the world’s foremost Matt Harvey Expert, I can tell you his only value would be an eating innings in lopsided games. HE CANNOT PITCH OUT OF TROUBLE and HE DOES NOT DO WELL WITH EVEN A RUNNER ON FIRST BASE. So, sure if the Cubs are beating you 10-1 and you want someone to waste some defensive outs…sure. Not sure who will need a 31 year old doing that next April (March), but if you think Matt is coming in to the close things down in the 8th inning, you need to stop living in the past.
You may recall that just 16 months ago, Matt was one of the Mets’ FIVE ACES in the rotation. Sixteen Months ago.
