Hey look at this!!
Matt Harvey came on in the 9th tonight for Vegas & closed things out, hitting 95 mph, notching 1 K & allowing 1 hit & 1 walk in a scoreless 9th to finish things off as Las Vegas clinched its division. Vegas will now face Sacramento in a 5-game playoff series starting on Wednesday

That’s exciting!
But wait, let’s read it….one inning…allowed a hit and a walk? That’s not what I want from my closer unless my closer is named John Franco.
And wait “closed things out” suggests something that isn’t true. Sure he finished the game….but the game was 8-1 when he came in. And THAT was after the Aviators put up 6 in the bottom of the 8th to blow things open.
This is what I’m saying – yeah if you need a warm body to kill an inning…sure why not…but there’s no real value here. One might also observe that the A’s can have 40 guys on their team right now and choose not to have Matt be one of them.
Matty Baseball and the Aviators advance to the playoffs now and you can see Matt celebrating if you keep your eyes on the lower left corner of this video.
