Hey it’s me again with yet another sure to be Unpopular Take.
I see Mets Manager For Now Mickey Callaway is thinking about batting Pete first so he can hit EVEN MORE HOME RUNS and break the record set by that other guy across town.
Yawn.
Look, I’m glad Pete had a nice year and all but I think 35 home runs might have been nice. 51, 55, 75….who cares. The number is so out of line with anything before that I can’t take it seriously. We all lived through this 20 years ago and if everyone wants to ignore Statistical Anomalies again hey feel free.
But whether he hits 35 or 85, let’s focus on the 3 hours and 29 minutes when Pete isn’t batting. You know what I see? Nothing.
Baseball used to have rallies. A few hits strung together. Guys on the bases. Tension.
Now? We sit around listening to Gelbs tell boring stories and then occasionally Pete homers. This is an awful product.
I know this will be top to bottom unpopular – except for the Gelbs part, nobody challenges me on that – and I don’t care. The sport is dying and I’m gonna raise my hand repeatedly as the people in charge let it die.
So Mickey – whatever. You have 4 games left. If you wanna bat Pete first so he can take an Anomaly record from the other guy….go nuts. The place will be empty, nobody will be watching. Bat the guy first. 51, 55, 60, 99…at this point who even cares?
