Baseball Hall of Immortals – Inductee #41: Joe Morgan
A 5-tool player who led the Cincinnati Reds to consecutive World Series championships in the mid 1970s, Joe Morgan is the 41st inductee into the Hall of Immortals.
An All-Star second baseman with the Houston Astros, Morgan’s career exploded following his trade to the Reds in 1971. In his first year in Cincinnati Morgan led the league in walks, OBP, and runs scored, while posting a .292 batting average and 58 stolen bases.
In 1975 and 1976, Morgan became the first (and only) second basemen to win back-to-back MVP awards. It’s no surprise that these were also the years that the Reds won back-to-back World Series.
Morgan ended his career with a .271 batting average, 268 HRs, 689 SBs (8th all-time at that point, 11th now), and over 1,600 runs scored.
As the greatest second baseman in history, Joe Morgan is an Immortal.
