Baseball Hall of Immortals – Inductee #51: Roberto Clemente

One of the most complete ballplayers in the post WW2 era, Roberto Clemente kicks off the second half of our list of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Immortals.

Clemente played 18 years for the Pirates, compiling 3,000 hits with a lifetime batting average of .317, 1,300+ RBIs and 1,400+ runs scored.  Along the way he led the league in batting 4 times, including a .357 average in 1967, was selected for 12 All Star teams, and won the MVP in 1966.

Clemente was even better in the field.  By all accounts he had the best arm in baseball and won 11 Gold Glove awards.

Tragically Clemente was killed during the off-season in 1972 when his plane, carrying relief supplies to NIcaraugua, crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico.

For what he did at the plate and in the field, Roberto Clemente is an Immortal.
