Happy Birthday Ron Darling and other Mets game notes

Justin Wilson became the 10th pitcher (11 times) in franchise history to earn a win on his birthday (last night) and the first since Dillon Gee on April 28, 2012 at Colorado…The only Mets pitcher to win twice on his birthday was Ron Darling (1985 and 1986), who is celebrating his 60th birthday today.

For some reason Keith planned to take tonight off and make Ron work on his birthday.  What the hay Keith?

Jacob deGrom is expected to return from “neck stiffness” so keep an eye on that.

New York is 7-1 in Jacob deGrom’s last eight starts, dating to September 9, 2019…In that time, deGrom himself is 5-0 with a 1.26 ERA (seven earned runs/50.0 innings) with 63 strikeouts and just seven walks…Prior to this stretch, the Mets had just seven wins in his previous 20 starts, despite deGrom posting a 2.58 ERA in that span.

deGrom is 5-0 with a 2.00 ERA (16 earned runs/72.0 innings) over his last 11 road starts…This is deGrom’s longest streak of road starts without taking a loss in his career (previous best was 10 in a row from June 25, 2015-April 24, 2016)…Only two Mets have gone more than 11 starts in a row without losing a game on the road: Dwight Gooden (15-straight, July 10, 1987-May 21, 1988) and Ron Darling (July 7, 1985-May 21-1986).

THE ALARM:  Dominic Smith leads the Mets with six home runs and 20 RBI…He is tied for eighth in the NL in home runs, tied for fourth in the NL and sixth in MLB in RBI and tied for sixth in the majors and tied for fourth in the NL in extra-base hits…He has 14 extra-base hits in 61 at-bats this season and sports a 1.135 OPS…which is a made up thing millennial like…..Smith hit 11 home runs in 177 at-bats last year.  Do the math on that and give him 500 ABs and then tell me the Mets shouldn’t trade Pete Alonso while he still has value.

Dominic Smith | INF/OF | .311, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 0 SB

THE CARCASS:  Over his last 13 games, Pete Alonso is batting .313/.411/.625 with nine runs, three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and eight walks…This compares to a .167/.327/.238 slash line with five runs, a home run, three RBI, seven walks and a .565 OPS over his first 11 games.

Pete Alonso | INF | .244, 5 HR, 13 RBI, 0 SB

THE ALBATROSS:  Since coming back from the IL, Canó is 8-22 (.364) with six runs, two doubles, three home runs, six RBI and a 1.227 OPS…He has reached base safely in 14 of his 16 games this season and is batting .393 (22-56) with 10 runs, four doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI, four walks with a .426 OBP and a .679 SLG…He has collected multiple hits in eight games…He ranks third among active players in hits (2,592), RBI (1,285), total bases (4,208), extra-base hits (927) and in runs scored (1,244).
