Baseball almost gets it right, markets player, then of course ruins it

So I was scrolling down twitter and I was like – HEY, this is cool!  Look at this!  Baseball is promoting its players!  Here is a player I had never heard of and now I know his name!

I decided then I would enthusiastically share this on the blog as its the sort of thing that MLB needs to do.

Then…..sadly……I noticed the sponsorship which is where I have crossed it out.   And I got sad.  Of course baseball can’t just grow the sport, they have to monetize every single inch of everything every time.  Would they have even done the tweet had some salesperson not bundled in some “additional value” into a package (We will include you in tweets!).   My guess is no.

So there is nothing pure about this.  Baseball doesn’t care about you Mr. Ramos…you were just today’s means to a sponsorship.

Now let us hear from the great Tom Petty.

If you reach back in your memory
A little bell might ring
About a time that once existed
When money wasn’t king
If you stretch your imagination
I’ll tell you all a tale
About a time when everything
Wasn’t up for sale

There was no use in pretending
No magic left to hear
All the music gave me
Was a craving for lite beer
As I walked out of the arena
My ears began to ring
And money became king
