The first place 2021 New York Mets….who cares?

There is a scene late in the run of Battlestar Galactica that comes to mind this morning.

It’s late in the series run, and the Galactica has been on the run for a long time, trying to find the promised land.  For reasons I won’t bore you with, Adama has to transfer his flag from the Galactica to that of a Cylon (the enemies) ship.   And he starts to think, “What are we even doing?”   He’s spent all this time fighting the Cylons, and now he’s living on one of their ships.

Which brings us to the first place 2021 Mets.

I find myself feeling like Adama this morning, because….well….what are we even rooting for?

Are we going to look back with fondness of that summer of Cameron Maybin and Khalil Lee?   Remember that great summer of Patrick Mazeika and Billy McKinney?   Will Old Timers’ Day 2041 have Wayne Randazzo telling us “Please welcome back our old friend…Wilfredo Tovar!!!”

What are we even rooting for?

I’m aware of the Jerry Seinfeld joke about rooting for the laundry, and I have rooted for a lot of laundry over the years….but I am finding myself less interested in this first place team than any Mets team ever, and I go back to 1977.

There aren’t my guys.  They aren’t your guys.  Every 5 days Jacob deGrom shows up and it feels kinda sorta like my Mets….and then there’s 4 days of random people in Mets uniforms.

Even if these guys keep it together for the summer, I’d have to imagine that it won’t be Maybin and Lee playing every day in October, it will be some other guys like Actual Met Michael Conforto.  I hope.

Part of my disassociation has been the terrible schedule.  The Mets’ schedule and I are not meshing.  Every time I am free they get rained out, and they sure love playing weekday afternoon games.  Personally, I heard one pitch yesterday, and that was only because I was scanning through the radio stations in my car and heard a pitch before going back to music.

I don’t expect this article to be popular.  Nothing I write is popular.   That’s perfectly fine.    But I ask you…..the 2021 Mets…..do you actually care?
