Was chatting with some fellow Mets fans. As Mets fans we are doom and gloom since it has been wired into our DNA.
What happens if say Terry Collins’ Mets are 11 and 16 on the morning of May 1st?
A good start is always important (My Yankees friend Mr. Sunshine spoke all summer about some dumb loss the NYY’s had in April) but for our collective panic it might be important for the New Regime to get off to a fast start.
Some “fans” have given up on 2011 and will just use a poor start to reinforce their “Mets suck” agenda.
The manager will be criticized no matter what, but it’ll take some time to get used to these guys and how they play together.
I saw the Giants last season in AZ and remember looking at the starting lineup and thought “Damn they suck”. A year later they are the champs. Sure anything can happen, I chalk 2011 as a wash, the real start to the regime will be 2012. A lot of the bad taste has been wiped away with the recent hirings. I hope we contend for a WC spot in 2011 but I don’t expect much. We need pitching and with no funds available Sandy and co. will have to moneyball it up for one season. It’s refreshing to see BASEBALL people running the Mets finally. LGM 2011 and Beyond!!!
Can we wait to see what our Opening Day roster might look like before we start playing “what if”?
I know we’re not going to see any big free agent acquisitions, but that doesn’t rule out a roster makeover via trade.
Paul – just relating what goes on in my life. It’s often what inspires the blog…and three mets fans had a conversation.
Here’s a counter though. What if the Mets start out 11 and 16..but the Phillies start out 10 and 17? and the Braves are 9 and 18?
the problem is that the mindset of the mets fan never got rebooted from “we were THIS close! we have to do it next year!” that should have happened the minute sandy alderson took the podium in the caesar’s club.
if they get off to an 11-16 start, um….who cares? as was well documented after the giants won the series two weeks ago, when the mets and giants met in the first series after the all star break, the giants were 41-40…the mets were 48-38. we all know how it ended.
in the alderson era, fans have to start conditioning themselves to NOT overreact to a small sample size. the same 27 games that doesn’t make joe mcewing an mvp if he hits .455 over the course of them doesn’t make or break a 162 game season. everything should be about progress towards sustained competitiveness. that’s all.
Brian you make too much sense. If we go 11-16 the fan base will bitch and moan because no one looks long term during the season. They see the Yanks at 18-9 and start stressing. At this point, I won’t believe the Met swin teh WS until the final out. Until then Ill be waiting for the other shoe to drop or for Beltran to blink
Here’s how the Daily News and NY Post work. If you win a meaningless game in June, tomorrow’s stories will extrapolate your win into a world series championship. If you lose, tomorrow’s stories will be about how stubborn management is, how foolish the owner is, and how uninspired the players are.
