Quiet morning, nothing even to link to, so I will share this which has been on my mind.
I have tickets for Saturday in my usual seats, the face on them is $34. I probably got some sort of discount for my 10 game plan…so let’s knock the number all the way down to $25 just to simplify the discussion.
You may have noticed that the Mets are offering 4 for $48. In the lower bowl. 48 divided by 4 is $12.
So by supporting the Mets early all year (my choice, nobody made me) I get to pay $50+ for two tickets upstairs while downstairs is 4 for $48.
The solution probably lies in offering folks like me extra tickets (not like the place is full) or crediting 2015 with some equivalent feel good amount or something…
…but today I feel like a dope. Again nobody made me buy tickets…but I sure feel stupid for doing so.
It’s easier to expand on your thoughts when you’re not limited to 140 characters, so I’ll do so here 🙂
I think there are a lot of us in the same boat. We’re dumb(?) enough to buy plans in advance and then find that the team uses “dynamic” pricing later to get people in the stands. Admittedly, the dynamically priced seats are not necessarily where I would want to sit for a game. However, the price is a lot more attractive.
My own plan is on the “Excelsior” level, which sounds incredibly pompous and is almost embarrassing to admit. For the first 3 years at Citi, we parked upstairs under the overhang – I’m not big on sun or rain, so we had the last row in section 518. Eventually, the missus’ knee problems let us to lower climates and I’m fortunate to be able to swing the cost of seats in the 300’s. These are easier to get to, in the shade, and have access to some nice areas. These also do not appear to be influenced by the dynamic pricing activities, so maybe I can’t complain. However, I still will.
My seats for the last weekend we attended were $61 each. These prices are slightly cheaper (I’m guessing about 10%) than what you can buy them for on-line. Of course, I’m not counting my fellow plan holders dumping the tickets cheaper on Stub Hub. If I do try to dump my own tickets, I need to sell at the range of the other seats. After Stub Hub fees, you end up losing money. The Mets will let you trade your tickets for similar seats to other games, but my 20 ticket plan is more than enough (especially for this team). I cant stand more games.
The net is that we’re getting jacked. There really is no reason to buy in advance — there’s no incentive. You can get the same good seats later on the secondary market for less money. The Mets offer no real advantage to buying a plan — very few perqs, only a small discount, etc. I think I only still buy because I feel some loyalty or feel that I’m in a special club and don’t want to give up my “seniority” – a seniority, by the way, that gets me absolutely nothing.
As a side note about seniority… I think I still feel burned by the time I dropped my R.E.M. fan club membership when I was in college. I found out that other people in the dorm offices used to steal my fan club packages and got tired of paying for stuff that would get “lost” in the mail. When I came back in, I never seemed to get the same cool things my other friends who never dropped their membership got — special tickets to show tapings (Unplugged, Story Tellers), better pre-sale tickets at concerts, etc. So, maybe I can blame R.E.M. for me sticking it out with the Mets.
Anyway… the net is that the Mets need to make these plans worth purchasing in advance. OK, I did get one pair of comp tickets this season with Delta Club access. That was pretty cool, but it’s not enough. We need more events, a bigger discount on tickets, a bigger discount on merchandise, discounts on food, what else? Get creative, Mets ticket office. Otherwise, I’ll be one of the others that drop my plan and simply buy tickets (and certainly fewer of them) when I find it convenient.
NeoBhagwan My ticket rep is always willing to help out with to tickets for a few games that were not in my plan but I agree that the mets need to do something to make even being a partial plan holder worthwhile. I have always said publicly and to anyone in the front office that the Mets should institute a tiered anniversary for partial plans with prizes
for each plateau. 2yr-5-yr-8yr-10 yr and so on. The top
plateau should be the ability to purchase playoff ticket (different section)
for every possible playoff game instead of getting a code and a phone #.
After all, the longtime partial plan holder is probably one of their biggest
supporter, who else should be at every game when the playoffs one day
miraculously occur? Then it wouldn’t matter what promo they ran for the non season ticket holder. If all longtime partial planners keep saying the same thing then maybe they will listen.
The Mets have been doing this for years. Buyer beware. They could care less. Now remember this for 2015. I was a Saturday Plan Holder for 25 YEARS!!! The way they treated us partial plan holders when $iti Field opened was a disgrace. First come first serve with no regards to senority. Half way thru the year I posted the remaining tickets on Stub Hub and have not been back since.
I enjoy seeing all the empty seats. I enjoy saving all that money. I enjoy spending my free time more with my family and friends then with Fred’s rejects and if you guys give it a try, I bet you will too…
We’ll, first off, I’ve been a full STH for 7 years and I don’t get free tix from my tix rep or a couple of tix in Delta…no perks at all. I must not have a good tix rep or they’re catering only to the people with the really expensive seats on field level. The 2 for 28 offer in honor of Murphy was bad enough but this 4 for 48 for 16 games is way over the top. The Mets are so desperate to sell tix that they have no regard for their STH or plan holders. You’re absolutely right, there is no reason to lay all this money out early on when we can take advantage of the sales on the secondary market. They didn’t offer 4 for 48 with a limit of 4 tix. They gave a maximum of 12 tix so people are buying the full 12 and reselling on stubhub way below face value and our plan discounts so we can’t compete unless we take a beating. Check out sec. 106, 130 & 131. Shame on the Mets organization. They show no appreciation or regard for their plan holders. 2015 will be different. Make a statement and don’t line their pockets.
metspolice well you know how to fix this, right?
“k9embar: metspolice well you know how to fix this, right?” Yep.
P.S. – The Mets just e-mailed me today and I can buy my 20 game ticket plan right now!!! 🙂
