So why were the Rays allowed to wear tribute caps but the Mets can’t?

Before we get started let me say loud and clear that in no way am I trying to diminish what the Rays did, I’m not here to crap on the Rays, I am not here to make light of any tragedy, and that I think what the Rays did was cool.

Orlando Rays caps
Thanks @Marcopolo15 for the photo

So here are the Rays, in an actual game, wearing an Orlando rays cap.  The Orlando Rays no longer exist.  Cool tribute.  I like cool tributes.

Every year around these parts we start a discussion about the Mets wearing first responder caps and we’re repeatedly told the Mets cannot wear them in-game.

So my question to those smarter than me, what is the rule on this?

Clearly you can wear a different cap if it’s a league wide thing, such as on Father’s Day.

Clearly you can throwback to your own past.

Clearly you can honor the Negro Leagues.

Clearly you can fauxback and make up a cap and that’s ok.

But first responder caps are not OK.  I will guess licensing something something

So I propose a work-around.  I’m looking at you Jeff Wilpon since you hold dominion over the Mets and Cyclones.

The Cyclones should do some sort of First Responders caps.  The Cyclones do one-off uniforms all the time.  And you know when would be a good night to do this…

Hey look at that.  Now that’s kind of soon and we’re gonna have to get moving on this, but I’m sure this can be done.

Call Darren and ask him to whip up something that somehow says first responders and New York…and then hand it in to whoever makes your caps as if it were your own.  Order 100 and put 50 away for September.

Then, come September, oh Say September 4th at home or September 11th in Atlanta, choose to wear the caps of your minor league affiliate.  What’s Torre gonna say?  He clearly has allowed an MLB team to wear a minor league cabin a MLB game this year.  There is precedent. If he fines you, you have a great case, and you’ll have the public o your side.  If Torre wants to take you on over 9/11 in New York City bring it on.

Wear the caps!
