As you saw via Adam Rubin, Terry is suggesting that 2017 could be his last year. That means we already have SUCCESSION CRISIS and a full blown TERRY WATCH WATCH!
So as blogs everywhere scramble to retype what Adam reported, I want to get ahead of the OBVIOUS BLOGGING news cycle and start randomly speculating about the next Mets manager, which most blogs won’t get around until tomorrow, and newspapers until Sunday.
So here’s a list, which like ALL THE LISTS you’re gonna read are nonsense since we all know that Sandy keeps everything close to the vest. But let’s have it.
Tim Teufel. Managed AA. Already there. You guys like 86 Mets I am told. Safe choice. Continuity. Why not?
Chip Hale. He will be the trendy pick. Already been here. Managed in the big leagues. Available if you park him somewhere for a year.
Bench Coach Dick Scott. I still don’t think Dick Scott actually exists, but if he does, your bench coach is kind of your right hand man, no? I predict: Unlikely
Donald Trump. Although The Donald would make the Mets great again, he’s older than Terry and the travel might wear him down. Pass.
Joe Torre. The guy just wins. Let’s bring him back, bring everything full circle, and in a total F**k you to MLB lets have Saint Joe wear the caps on 9/11/17. Unlikely.
Wally. Not happening.
Keith. Hey Keith, wanna work 250 days next year and make all the fans wind up hating you? Too bad, because he’d probably be GREAT at it. Not happening.
Gary. Great broadcaster, but could have a potential MVP on his team and think he’s a net negative. Pass.
Lee Mazzilli. Got totally ignored last time, I don’t see why he’d be a choice now.
Bobby V. You saw that last Red Sox season right? Pass.
Darren Meenan. The fans would love him. Could be a super star. Moves tickets. Good with the media. The players love him. Give him a strong bench coach to handle that pesky strategy stuff and this is the move.
Robin Ventura. I was gonna suggest “Random 2000 Met” but then I remembered one managed. He’s free. See Chip Hale discussion.
Davey Johnson II. He’s the All Time Franchise Manager, how do you top that? Oh wait, older than Terry.
Joe Girardi. Actually hmmmm…..his contract is up after 2017. Really not a bad choice at all. Hmmmmm.
Sandy Alderson. Put up or shut up. Lou Lamoriello came down to the bench and finished first. Let’s see what you got Mr. GM.
Random 2000 Mets Player. Fans would like it. Could be Johnny F or whoever you wanna pick.
Adam Rubin. I dunno, I kind of like the idea of some whippersnapper from ESPN asking Adam tough questions about game strategy.
Fredi Gonzales. Wasn’t he good before the Braves gave him no players?
Tom Kirkman. Steady in a storm. Has a little Jack Bauer in him.
Donnie Baseball. The Marlins are due for a fire sale and managerial change. Thank how it would annoy certain fanbases.
But in the end we’ve wasted our time because the manager of the 2018 Mets will be…..
Terry Collins. He will get one more two year deal and one of those planned exits where in “2020” he’ll have a senior advisor role with the club. And the new guy will get to handle the rebuild once DW retires and the Mets can’t afford to keep all these pitchers. Fun times ahead.
