On twitter earlier today, an interesting discussion. In this post, we will face our fears and hope they never come to be, but we will face them. The question….when the time comes, how will it end for David Wright as an active player?
Scenario 1: we get a sudden written statement about his retirement from David who stays out of sight for a little while.
Scenario 2: We get word that David will hold a press conference. A few days of leaks about what the presser will be, followed by the actual press event. David shows up and emotionally retires to select members of the media.
Scenario 3: The A-Rod scenario. This is the one I like best (and by best I mean best of horrible options. The scenario I like best is that David retires as MVP and multiple World Series champion). David announces that he is unable to continue playing and his last game will be at home on Date X late in September when everything has been decided. David starts at third base and bats third. He either gets pinch run for or takes the field for the top of the second and Terry lets him walk off to applause.
This next one scares me. It would be so so so so so emotional, and I think we would all want to be there.
Scenario 4: David Wright Day. David announces that he will retire and will speak to the fans at an upcoming home game. This is the “player says goodbye, speaking into a microphone near home plate” scenario. The optics of that scenario has immediately made you think of something else that I don’t even want to mention.
Scenario 5: the long goodbye. David endlessly rehabs, maybe with some brief appearances, before retiring years from now when the contract expires.
Which scenario would you prefer (obviously we all prefer the Happy and Healthy David scenario) and which do you think is likely?
Should the Mets retire his number, or do we stick to the Cooperstown Rule?
