Mets Today’s manager matrix

Speaking of Lee Mazzilli…

I also think that former fan favorites Lee Mazzilli and Joe McEwing could generate a modicum of interest. And obviously, I believe that hiring Wally Backman could directly result in ticket sales. There is a large number of fans who loved Wally when he was a player, combined with many more who would pay to see what he might do — whether it’s chew out an umpire or call for a suicide squeeze.

I like linking to anything that mentions Lee Mazzilli, but the Mets Today article is pretty interesting because Joe weighs different factors and made a snazzy chart.  Good read for y’all to check out while I’m at Junior’s soccer game.

Subway Squawkers isn’t feeling the Mazzilli love

Good morning Mets fans, it’s another soccer Saturday so while I get my traditional Unnamed Donuts & Coffee and before we get to overanalzing every last work Sandy said…

But who would want Lee Mazzilli as manager of the Mets? He was fired from Baltimore for going 9-28, after being in first place for the first 2 1/2 months of 2005. He was a terrible bench coach for the Yankees, known mostly for being one of Joe Torre’s guys than for any good decision-making skills. Mazzilli couldn’t even hack it as an SNY analyst, showing zero personality. Is he somebody who can really turn the Mets around? I don’t think so.

Hmmm, I like the Sqwakers…I think I’ll just move on and keep eating my Unnamed Donuts.

Sandy Answers Our Tweeted Questions

Is Sandy Alderson reading Mets Police?

(Hi Sandy – loved the tie today)

Yesterday afternoon prior to the press conference the Mets tweeted:

What do you want to ask Sandy? Send us your questions and we’ll pick a few for Sandy to answer today

I know a lot of people responded, including yours truly as well as Shannon.  Tonight, the Mets sent out an email with a video link of Sandy answering selected questions tweeted by fans.

He answered 3 questions – 2 of them were ours

You can see the full video here, but let’s look at the questions we submitted

My question to Sandy – Do you feel that there are any untouchable players in the organization should the opportunity for a trade present itself?

Hi response was basically no.  There are players whose cost would be very high, others that they would not shop, and core “fan favorites” – “but in terns of having truly untouchables, the answer is we don’t have any”

Shannon’s question was the final one – I would like to know if you would consider winning the NL but not the World Series to be a successful year?

Shannon must be doing cartwheels over this answer – “…it would be foolish not to acknowledge that there had been something accomplished, but ultimately that’s not the goal, and from personal experience, nobody’s happy going home number 2”

What can we get from this?  I think a lot.  Nobody is untouchable – so if the right deal presents itself that makes baseball sense, he will do it (and I believe he’s got the cajones to pull it off too).  But most importantly, a competitive team is not the goal – winning the World Series is the goal.

And just in case Sandy really does read Mets Police – Sandy, Day 1 was good and you made at least me smile.  I’m looking forward to Day 2.

My Sandy Alderson quick reaction

I enjoyed Sandy.  Thought he was a million times smoother than Omar (I don’t care if he says ‘um’ like some pointed out)….but smooth on SNY is not the same as a World Series.

No changes to the ballpark = good.

Talk of being competitive worries me.  I don’t want competitive.  The 2007 and 2008 Mets were competitive.  The 2010 Mets were competitive into July.

Jeff, Sandy and (I think it was) Uncle Saul all wore yellow ties.  Fred didn’t, I forget what color his was.  Dave Howard wore orange.

What did you guys think?

Good use of social media by the Mets, I cant wait to see how this factors in to the press conference.  The beat writers will lose their mind if someone reads “Joe The Mets Fan asked…”   Sorry old guard, welcome to the 2010’s.
