You Want To Break Up The Mets Core? Then It’s Reyes Who Goes.

The trendy Mets topic of the day is “the Mets core.”

This is where everyone rolls out the theory that Reyes/Wright/Beltran/Delgado are never going to win together.

Concurrently, all of Metsdom agrees that the Mets need pitching.

You have to give to get, right?  You can’t say “we’ll give the Giants Omir Santos and ‘prospects’ for Lincecum” excpet on WFAN at 3 in the morning.

You want something, then you have to give something.

So let’s say we want to make a big move.

I think franchise-wise it’s best if Wright and Reyes have 15 year runs in Flushing.   The team has never had a superstar go end to end.  Even Seaver only played 11 years as a Met.

So that leaves Delgado and Beltran.

Delgado turns 37 this year, and if you trade for him he isn’t signed for 2010.   You can just grab him in the offseason if you want him, and first base isn’t that hard a position to fill.

That leaves Carlos Beltran.

Carlos Beltran, a center fielder, 31 years old, and “only” making $18.5 million through and including 2011.   One problem, a full no trade clause.

So, now we’re only left with horrible options.   If you want to make the blockbuster, it’s Wright or Reyes.  If it’s me, and I had to move one, I keep Wright.

The other choice is to sit on you hands and hope the pitching magically gets better.

Take a look at this list of 2010 free agents …under the assumption that a team is never going to let a stud go unless it’s a walk year.  Is there someone on this list you’d move Jose Reyes for?  Cliff Lee is your best bet.

These seasons can get away from you fast.

Do you want to trade Jose Reyes for Cliff Lee?  If not, it might be a long year.

(Is this a stupid post and stupid idea?  Yeah, it is.  That’s why I walked you through it.  The core ain’t going nowhere.)

Sometimes Complaining About Mets Works

Neil Best of Newsday  reports closed captioning is coming to SNY.   See, sometimes complaining works!

Effective May 1 (when the Mets visit the Phillies), SNY plans to offer closed captioning – for Mets games only.
It is a belated move three-plus seasons after the network launched, and it would have been nice to have all programming captioned.
But it is much better than nothing, and will serve as a bridge to March 16, 2010, when FCC rules will require the network to be all-captioned.

Mailbag: Black Mets Uniforms

Got a bunch of comments on black Mets uniforms today.  Glad to see I’m not alone.

  • I can’t stand those black uniforms. The classic blue with pinstripes should be worn every home game. Can we start a petition or something???
  • The black UNIs look EXACTLY that bad – completely expansion team. Plus they’re bad karma

  • *wear the gray with NEW YORK with the blue cap on the road
  • mets are 1-2 (now 1-3) when wearing black…. if they win tonight with grey on i swear… when they wear black its bad luck
  • Please get rid of those hideous black uniforms and caps!!! They should wear the gray with NEW YORK with the blue cap at home, and pinstripes with the blue cap at home!!! Only good thing about last night is at least they did not wear the stupid two tone blue and black batting helmet which is a disaster! Come on Mets you have til the end of May to submit new uniforms for next year, get on it Wilpons!

and one vote for

  • Whats the big deal about the black Uni? They dont look bad. Just something else to complain about as a Mets fan ;-/
Howie Rose hates them, Mets Blog hates them, fans hate them….why do these exist?

Mailbag: Should the Mets Play "Meet The Mets" Instead of Sweet Caroline?

Melh07302 has left a new comment on your post “Paint The Wall Blue Already (Newsday)“:

I heard Dave Howard say in his interview with WFAN that the blue was a color that would fade faster over time. So they chose to use balck. Who cares..?? Do it over when it does fade. The blue outfield walls at Shea seemed to last ok the past 22 years I went there.

As far as “Seet Caroline” goes… GET RID OF THAT GARBAGE PLEASE!!!! I booed it as loud as I could when I went to a game last friday and I wasn’t the only one. That song sucks. What happened to “
I’m a Believer“. At least let the fans choose like they did last year when they voted for the Monkees Song. “Meet the Mets” would be perfect. Damn, I wish I owned the Mets, I promise everyone on here would not be complaining. If we can’t win, at least give us a better song in the damn 8th inning for heaven sake and have more royal blue in the ballpark.

That’s two suggestions now for Meet the Mets.  What does everyone think?

Selig: Wilpons Are Sensitive (Washington Post)

Well maybe I changed the headline the Washington Post used but I didn’t make up the quote.

“And I know the Wilpons. They’re very sensitive about all this.”

What’s the “this?”  Bud Selig says the Yankees and Mets are considering adjusting the price of the premium seats.

In the article the teams spokespeople deny they are considering it.
