Euro 2008

Spent about a half an hour looking around to see if there are any fun soccer blogs. They are few and far between….but I’m feeling the Euro 2008 and my adopted team of Espana.

So since I don’t know anything about soccer, I need to cut and paste from someone who does.

And since everyone is now rolling their eyes, I need to help sucker you in…so courtesy of the folks at hotdogandfriends, here’s a longer than usual cut and paste complete with snarky commentary and pretty women.

Switzerland – Your old buddy Hotdog has a horse in this race. Switzerland kicks off Euro 2008 this Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Jakob Stadion, which was just a short ride on the #14 tram from my place in Basel. My adopted home for 18 glorious months, Switzerland stands a puncher’s chance to advance out of the group stage.

Tip Of The Cap To Jim McKay

Sorry to hear that Jim McKay passed away. If there’s any silver lining that can come from that it’s that it comes on a day where all eyes will be on ABC Sports for the Belmont, so hopefully they will work in an all-star tribute.

It’s 96 degrees in the shade at Mets Police HQ so a tip of the hat to Jim, go Big Brown, go Spain (adopted team for Euro 2008) and of course Lets Go Mets (except Willie.)

R.I.P. Jim McKay (1921 – 2008)

Sad news this morning as longtime ABC announcer Jim McKay passed away at age 86.

Growing up McKay’s voice meant 2 things to me – Wide World of Sports (who will ever forget “The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat”), and the Olympics. McKay covered a dozen Olympic games, including the winter games of 2002 when ABC “leant” him to NBC for their coverage (one of the cooler things done on TV in the last decade).

Big Brown To Have Better Career Than You

Starting to get really psyched for the Triple Crown.

Win or lose, looks like Big Brown will have a great job!

The winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness already has a syndication deal reportedly worth more than $50 million. Once he is retired from the track, he likely will command a stud fee of $100,000 for at least two years.

Willie Watch: Two Troubling Sentences

These are two sentences that I read in Newsday. They worry me.

Nuñez was batting .133 (6-for-45) at New Orleans. Randolph indicated he could use him to spell either David Wright or Luis Castillo.

You’re going to “rest” Wright for Abraham Nunez? Really?

Willie had a nice week. It’s over. I’m restarting the Willie Must Go brigade. Who’s in?
