Big Mets News. Murphy to First Base

Okay so that news about Murphy playing at first base tonight would really only be big news to Shannon.
The real big news is that David Wright is back in the line up tonight and at third base tonight.

Here is the line up.

1 Reyes SS
2 Turner 2B
3 Beltran RF
4 Wright 3B
5 Murphy 1B
6 Pagan CF
7 Duda LF
8 Paulino C
9 Pelfrey P

And the Mets are wearing Black tonight.

Mets Claim Outfielder Mike Baxter

This is from Adam Rubin over at ESPN New York.

The Mets have claimed outfielder Mike Baxter off waivers from San Diego and optioned him to Class A St. Lucie. Here’s the release:

The New York Mets announced today that the club has claimed outfielder Mike Baxter off waivers from the San Diego Padres and optioned him to St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League to continue his major league rehabilitation.

Baxter, a Whitestone, Queens native, had surgery earlier this year to repair ligaments in his left thumb that he injured during Spring Training. Before being claimed by the Mets, Baxter had appeared in 11 major league rehabilitation games with Lake Elsinore (A) of the California League. Baxter began his rehabilitation on June 8, batting .278 (10-36) with one double and two RBI.

The 26-year-old appeared in nine games with the Padres last year, collecting one hit and one RBI in eight at-bats.

Baxter starred at Archbishop Molloy in Queens before teaming up with Tampa Bay Rays lefthanded pitcher David Price at Vanderbilt University.

He is a career .278 minor league hitter with 156 doubles, 35 triples, 47 home runs and 326 RBI in 687 games.

Okay so this isn’t huge news on any front. I just happened to have graduated from Archbishop Molloy in the 1994 and for me it is cool to see someone from Molloy claimed by the Mets.

Looks like a pretty good crowd from these pics despite the intense heat of today. Keeps sending any tips to me at media [email protected] and follow me on twitter @mediagoon.

Mets Party Patrol in Promenade

Laura aka MetsMom, let us know that the Mets Party Patrol is now working up in the Promenade area.

My husband and son were at last night’s game and reported that the Party Patrol was in Promenade tossing t-shirts to the crowd.  I’m happy to report that my husband was able to get one for my son (he’s moving up in the competition for most fun parent at a Mets game, though I’m still in the lead).  Nice job by the Mets.  It’s nice to see them getting some of the “perks” to the common folks upstairs, not just the ones who are at field level.
I don’t know if they are doing this in any of the other sections of Citi. Any of you guys see them on any other level?

Mets Bobble Head Curse?

Here is a comment from last night’s crowd shots post which also included a pic of the Ike Davis bobble head.

Steve D
Isn’t there a Gold’s Horseradish Bobblehead Curse? It struck again.

Seems like there could be. I haven’t given it much thought but Steve sure did.He tipped me off to this post from the NY TIMES Baseball Blog. This is from May 25, 2011.

Since 2002, nearly every player who has been commemorated with a bobblehead sponsored by Gold’s Horseradish has already been injured, gotten injured or ended up performing poorly. Marc Gold, co-owner of Gold Pure Food Products and a lifelong Mets fan, said that his company’s signature horseradish has “tons of of health benefits.”

I never thought about this before. Or, I have and I just don’t remember it. Thank you Hypnotoad.

Lets check out some of the Honorees shall we?

Mike Piazza was given a bobblehead day in 2002 and finished the year with 33 home runs and 98 runs batted in. The next year, he hit 11 home runs in 68 games.

I think that one is a stretch.

Kaz Matsui, who was heralded as the next Ichiro, was given a bobblehead. “Great preseason hoopla,” Gold said, “But …”

He just straight out sucked. Remember when Reyes was moved to 2nd for him?

Jason Bay was celebrated. “Where did the home runs go?” Gold said. “He did not even play on his bobblehead day.”

Bay must have that bobble head in his locker. He still isn’t doing anything.

The streak appears intact this year. The next Gold’s Horseradish bobblehead day is on Tuesday, July 19. Hopefully this year’s recipient, Ike Davis, will be off the disabled list by then

And, we all know Ike might be done for the year.
