Pelfrey Was Injured Most of Last Season

This might explain the slight swoon Big Pelf had during the season. But it seems he did “MAN UP AND PLAY BETTER” and also played through the injury.

“I had a strained rotator cuff and a strained posterior capsule almost the whole season,” Pelfrey told the Daily News Thursday, a day before making his first Opening Day start Friday night against Florida. The 27-year-old righty is ready to be the Mets’ ace, a leadership role that he relished even as the No. 2 guy last year, when he decided to pitch through pain.

Pelfrey thinks he injured himself when he got the save in the 20 inning game on April 17th. Man, that was so long ago I forgot that he even did that.

Pelfrey insisted to Jerry Manuel and Warthen that he could pitch. Did he begrudge either of them for granting his request?

“Absolutely not, because Jerry and Dan both told me at the time not to, and I kept saying I could go,” he said. “I really think that coming in relief probably was what caused it in the first place. Looking back now, I don’t know if I would ever come in in relief again, unless it’s my job”

I agree with you Big Pelf. I think last year was the season you showed your mettle, but don’t do that again unless its for a must win in Game 7 of the World Series.

Letter to Mets Fans from Terry Collins

Happy Mets Opening Day everyone. I woke up this morning to see a letter from Colactus in my good old electronic mailbox via the Flushing Flash.

April 1, 2011

Dear Mets Fans:

With our 2011 opener tonight in Florida, I want to make this pledge to Mets fans — our team will play the game the right way.

We will always hustle on the bases, run balls down in the outfield and never take anything for granted, no matter the score of the game.

We had a great Spring Training. From day one my message has been look ahead, not backward, and not to worry about what the people outside the clubhouse are saying. If we pitch and play defense like I know we can, we will surprise a lot of people, a lot of people.

I stack our lineup against anyone else’s in the league. Getting Carlos Beltran back and hitting cleanup is really big. The way Carlos handled his move to right field was one of the classiest things I have ever seen. Angel Pagan is coming off a great season. While we had a little setback this week with Jason Bay — who was swinging the bat well — going on the Disabled List, he shouldn’t be out too long. We believe with the three of them on the field, we have one of the top outfields in baseball.

Our infield is anchored by the two All-Stars on the left side: David Wright at third and Jose Reyes at short. I think David will add on to his numbers from last year and Jose is ready to have a tremendous season. He is one of the most dynamic players in the game. Ike Davis will continue to develop at first base and Jose Thole is one of the fine young catchers in the game. Brad Emaus, a Rule Five pick, got better and better as the spring went on and won the second base job.

On the mound, sure we are going to miss Johan Santana until he comes back, hopefully in mid-year. But this spring, I think we established a solid rotation with Mike Pelfrey, followed by R.A. Dickey and Jonathon Niese. Chris Young and Chris Capuano proved that they are healthy and they really strengthen us on the back end.

We remade our bullpen and we think we have quality arms who throw strikes to get to closer Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod has just had a fantastic spring and I never have seen him throwing better. People like Bobby Parnell, D.J. Carrasco, Taylor Buchholz, Blaine Boyer, Tim Byrdak and Pedro Beato, another Rule V selection who is from Queens, will give us a solid pen.

I believe we have fortified our bench with the additions of Scott Hairston, Willie Harris, Ronny Paulino (who will begin the year on the Disabled List), and Chin-lung Hu along with Daniel Murphy.

It’s been 12 years since I have started a season as a major league manager. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be leading the New York Mets and am very excited about the season ahead.

Thanks for your support and see you at Citi Field.
Sincerely,
Terry Collins

Mets Fan Optimism in the Film World

I don’t make any secret that I work in the film business. And it seems to me that there a tons and I mean tons of Mets fans that work with me. I think I have figured out why. Alot of people think it is glamourous to work in tv or film, but not so much. There are long grueling hours, working in intense heat, freezing temps, snow, rain, lifting heavy cables, lights, set pieces, yadda yadda. At the end of the day though we all basically enjoy what we do and wouldn’t trade it in for any other profession.

I think thats why Mets fans are a plenty in that world. We as Mets fans, stick with the team no matter how good or bad they are. All the stuff that has been going on with the Mets organization might beat us down a little but we keep coming back because no matter what, we wouldn’t trade our team in for any other baseball team.

After saying all of that, I have been talking to a lot of my fellow Mets fans on the crew on the film that I have been working on. We can talk for a while because there is a lot of downtime between setting up shots. There  seems to be  a lot of cautious optimism. Most think the Mets are going to have a decent year. They think that the Mets are going to play well and play hard. They think that the team is going to make you want to root for them. The Mets will be that scrappy boxer that might know he is going to lose a round but he is going to keep getting back up no matter what. He is going to give it his all. Just like they think the Mets will.

Other Mets fans on the job I have talked to fall into another category. They think the Mets might surprise people and be better then what some think. They tell me that they feel the Mets might just miss out on the Wild Card and make for a fun and exciting season. I fall into I just want the Mets to do well, don’t embarrass themselves on the field, and just to show they have heart. I will be happy then.

Hey, maybe its because we deal in the industry of making make believe feel like reality in the film world. But right now a lot of us are believing in the Mets having  a nice respectable  and maybe even a winning season.

Mets Police Tickets

I am going to try to channel my inner Shannon for this one guys.

Hey you guys know Shannon is a capitalist. And while waiting for the unnamed donut chain to sponsor The Mets Police, he has partnered up with Tiqiq.

On that note here is an image of what the 2011 MLB Opening Day ticket prices are going for. You can click the image to find tickets.

New Mets SNY Commercial
