Rats I have to comment on Castillo

Stupid me, in my excitement about the Castillo release I promised I would comment later.  Now it’s later.

Um….

Well, we all kind of thought this would happen.  The only real surprise is that it happened today.

I guess long-term it’s a good sign that Sandy isn’t afraid to make moves, and it’s “cool” that Jeff signed off on it (did I just use cool and Jeff in a sentence?) so it shows hope that ownership understands that money spent ain’t coming back so just move forward.

As for Mr. Castillo, I wish him well.  I hope he leads a long and prosperous life and finds happiness.

As I type this I see several Mets fans sitting in the stands (on TV) wearing blue caps.  Man those pop.

Oh….I think Sandy accidentally did Andy Martino a favor today.

Castillo has been released

Details here and elsewhere.  I’ll follow up with commentary soon.

METS RELEASE LUIS CASTILLO

FLUSHING, N.Y., March 18, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced that they have released 35-year-old second baseman Luis Castillo.

The 5-11, 191-pound switch-hitter had one year left on his contract.

“This was baseball decision,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “I met with Terry (Collins) and made a recommendation to Jeff (Wilpon) and Jeff approved on behalf of ownership.”

Castillo was acquired by the Mets from the Minnesota Twins on July 30, 2007 for minor league catcher Drew Butera and minor league outfielder Dustin Martin.

He has a .299 career average over 13 major league seasons with 194 doubles, 59 triples, 28 home runs, 443 RBI and 370 stolen bases.

News reporter brings up Castillo ‘race factor’ for reason I can’t figure out

Andy Martino in The News doesn’t call you racist, but he sure danced around it in this morning’s article.

I keep looking for sentences to pull out of the article, but I can’t find anything that stands alone without fanning the fire.

Basically, what my brain is processing fro Andy is – there’s a man named Luis, who is Dominican apparently, and his skin may be darker than yours, but his friend says you don’t like him because he hasn’t performed, but Luis is a good guy who mentored Reyes, who you do like, and you also like Pagan because he played well, and you’ve been tough on some white underperformers, and Castillo did miss the Walter Reed trip, and he did drop the popup, and there was once a man named Omar and there was once a man named LoDuca and all that adds up to this headline:

Mets fans have lost patience with second baseman Luis Castillo, and it is hard to ignore race factor

WHAT?

I’ve read the article 5 times and I have no idea what the point was…but I think you might be being called a racist.
