Fact or Myth: 1978 Mets Banner Day (Picture)

Can anyone tell me what is happening in this picture?

Pete sent it over and says it is something called “Banner Day.”

Pete claims this photo was taken at Shea Stadium in 1978.

To believe that I would have to believe the Mets let fans walk on the field with signs telling everyone how much they love the team.

Why would a team do such a thing?

I mean who is going to do that, some little kid?

As if 35 years later that kid is going to remember that he walked around the field with a sheet.

As if a team could invent a tradition unique to the franchise.

As if a team wants the fans walking around feeling like a community.

Hogwash I say.  Just run around the bases kid, spend two seconds with Mr. Met II and be happy with that.

Nice try Pete, I don’t know how you photoshopped this, but there’s no way the Mets would ever let children walk around the field holding a sheet.  I’ve been following this team this entire century, and I’m telling you there’s no way they would ever do such a thing.

Next thing you’ll want them to bring back old Mets players, as if someone wants to see a bunch of old men in baseball uniforms.  That would be way too much work to organize.

”That’s silly, and that’s not the reason,” said Dave Howard, the Mets’ executive vice president for baseball operations. ”It was particularly unpopular as a promotion. We didn’t see an increase in ticket sales or interest from sponsors or even from people who already had tickets. It died of its own unpopularity in the early ’90s. (Times)

It’s all about the money Mets fans.  Always is.  Read the quote read the quote read the quote.

Whew, got worked up there.  This post was supposed to be part of Share Your Shots where you send your Mets photos to [email protected] and I kinda went on a tear and then typed Banner Day David Howard into google, and even though he’s talking about Old-Timer’s Day there it still made me see red.  Gotta go chill.  Send me some pictures will ya?

Speaking of sponsors, I can’t wait for the promotions calendar.  My post that day will be something like this…

“May 16th.  Kraft Singles Mets crazy straw night” – I’ll whip out Dave’s quote and then rant that Kraft could spend money on crazy straws but we can’t have Ed Kranepool come by?

Ok I’m ranting again.  I’ve done this before but here goes.  I’m going to plan Old-Timer’s Day.

Hey Keith and Ron, need you to come downstairs at 1 on August whateverth.  Someone call Seaver and tell him we’ll give him 50 grand and plug the marines and his wine.  Tell Bob Ojeda at SNY to catch a ride with Burkhardt.    Do we still have Mazzilli’s number?  How we doing with that prominently displayed Gooden signature we promised?  Call Doc and we’ll knock that out.  Tell Wally to let the third base coach run the dopey A ball team.

That’s 5 minutes work, three phone calls and I have 7 Mets there already.  Kranepool will show up, trust me.

Rant over.  For now.  Your turn.

Bay Shirts and a Phillies Cruise

Some quickies…

Corey (who knows) says:

Jason Bay Name & Number Tee’s will be at Modell’s Sporting Goods tomorrow by noon.
Sizes S-XXL
Men’s 17.99
Kids’ 15.99

Hopefully they are in the window when I walk by so I can snap some pictures.

Next topic:  The Phillies are having a cruise.  My inclination was to do my usual and whine that the Mets should do cool things like this.  Fortunately I read before I typed:

Joining us on board will be JC RomeroShane VictorinoRyan MadsonMatt Stairs, the Phanatic, former Phillie Greg “The Bull” Luzinski and broadcaster Scott Palmer.

Let’s translate that to Flushingese:

Joining us on board will be the Japanese J.J. Putz (I should learn his name), Jeff Francouer, Tim Redding, Mr. Met, Garry Sheffield, former Met Rusty Staub and broadcaster Howie Rose.

I’d love to get some quality time in with Howie, but I don’t know about investing in a cruise with this lot.  I’m glad we don’t have a Mets cruise.  A fan-fest in 2011 would be a good idea.

That reminds me, can anyone tell me what 1,962 plus 50 is?  I just want to bring that up now and then while it’s early in case some folks are not paying attention.

If the Philly Cruise fan discovered I linked, I wish you no harm sir.  You’ve kicked our ass three times and you have a nice site and slideshow.  I just don’t want to go on a Mets cruise.

Tomorrow on Mets Police:

  • One of my better rants about a certain day that involved banners.  That’s the leadoff, and I think I’m mad at Dave Howard again and I might withdraw my man-date offer and see if Craig Marino will go instead.  Dave seemed kind of mean on TV when he had the Rangers press conference.
  • More ticket office observations.
  • Yogi Berra stuff
  • Alternate caps of course
  • A guest post
  • and “some Mets news.”   I have no idea what it is but I thought I’d “pull a Francesa” which is my new favorite phrase.  How’s that Mets news for later this week coming Mike?

Alternate New York Mets Caps Day 42

Hmm this one is a tough call.   Sure we all like the ’86 Mets, and that was the logo – but I think you’d look a little swishy in this one.   My official recommendation is that you buy one for your girlfriend and ask her to wear it…that will work for everyone.  Click the cap if you’d like to get her one for Valentine’s Day.  What says I love you better than an 86 Mets cap?

Re-post: The 2010 Hall of Garvey Inductees

I’m reposting the below.  When the list of new folks eligible for the Hall of Fame came out, I revisited my “Hall of Garvey” which is for the pretty good.   I would consider Andre Dawson to be pretty good.  I heard Russo talking about how Craig Biggio will make the Hall of Fame but isn’t “really a Hall of Famer” and Chris said Biggio wasn’t even the best player on his team or the best second baseman of his time.   I will put Biggio in the HOG (Hall of Garvey) when the time comes.

Here’s a repost of the 2010 ballot:

Years ago I created the “Hall of Garvey.”  It’s a place for the very very good.   Those who are just shy of the Hall of Fame  Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly are in the HOG, and this year’s Hall of Fame ballot provides some new nominees, and there’s some pretty good players on the list.  However, there’s a difference between pretty good and all-time.
Let’s take a look at the 2010 Hall of Fame ballot and see who should make the HOF, who makes the HOG and who makes neither.
Mark McGwire:  Fame.  I’m sorry everyone, he was America’s sweetheart in 1998 and you all cheered for him.  If you didn’t think his workout plan was suspect at the time you were lying to yourself.  Blew away a record that hadn’t been touched in 40 years.  I’m not going to ignore his fame, his infamy nor his 583 home runs. The Hall of Fame will be absurd without Bonds and Rose in it, as you’ll lose the home run record holder and the hit king.   Start a Hall of Nice Guys or get over it.
Edgar Martinez.   Garvey.   There will be a push for Edgar but 2200 hits and how about you pick up a glove and catch a ball.
Barry Larkin.  Garvey.  I want to give him fame just for playing 19 seasons with one team…but 2340 hits is why the Hall of Garvey was started.  Go stand next to Steve and his 2599 hits.
Fred McGriff.  Garvey.   2009 is quite a year for the HOG.   Fred was a very good player, but 441 home runs in an era where that’s not that many.   I guess he should have cheated.
Roberto Alomar.   Garvey.  There was a time where he was talked about as being in his way to being the best second baseman ever.  He fell off a cliff after age 32, just in time to come to the Mets and fall out of Fame contention.   A pretty good ballplayer even if it never showed in Queens.
Pete Rose. Fame.   4256.  You can’t ignore it.
Robin Ventura.   None.   I won’t go down the list of everyone eligible for the Hall of Fame but I will cover two ex-Mets.  Nice player, I liked him, but you gotta draw a line somewhere and the line is above 1885 hits.
Todd Zeile.   None.  Another nice player, but were you ever at a game and thought to yourself “there goes one of the best baseball players I have ever seen?”
This is just one man’s opinion, and I don’t get a vote for the HOF.   However, I do run the Hall of Garvey.   Congratulations to the Class of 2010, Roberto Alomar, Fred McGriff, Barry Larkin, and Edgar Martinez.

My 2009 Hall of Garvey Class:  Bert Blyleven, Jim Rice and Dale Murphy to the HOG.

Previous inductees include:  Steve Garvey, Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly.

By the way, do y’all realize that as time marches on, technologies change, and newspapers die, someday someone like Matt Cerrone will have and will deserve a ballot for the actual Hall?

Another Mets ticket office anecdote

Ed posted this as a comment but I thought it warranted a post.  Good info here.

Shannon,

I have a 15 day ticket plan, the orginal deadline was Dec. 18th. I called to say that I wanted to move my seats within the same price range but to a better view and gave them the location ( 528 to 524). They said I needed to take advantage of the on-line partial renew plan and that my name would be placed on a list in the order I renewed. They explained to me that the section I was looking to move into was sold out last year and I needed to wait until they had a renewal totals in,seasons ticket holders, then partial season holders and then 15 day holders had preference.

I made my partial payment and after not hearing from them since the deadline past I called them today. They stated they were currently going through the process of counting non renewals on season tickets, moving 40 game plan requests and 15 day plans on the list who renewed would be getting calls next week. They had my request and stated basically that I would probably get my request based on availability and when I renewed.

They were very helpful, polite and stated everything very clearly.

Thanks Ed, good explanation, and I enjoy this type of information-cycle that we had today on the site.  I think it’s good for fans to have this type of info-exchange.  Much appreciated.

Personally, I still think they should just take your money and move you quickly.

My brain:  Wouldn’t a computer or excel spreadsheet be able to quickly count the non-renewals?  I’ve never ran a ticket office, what do I know.  Just seems strange from afar, but I’m happy to hear they were helpful, polite, clear and that you came away satisfied.

Keep this stuff coming Mets fans!
