Some Quality New York Mets Razzing From Philadelphia

Dear Mets fans,
It’s been a while since you last came to visit. You weren’t missed all that much. We love to hate each other, sure, but it was kind of nice without you.

This is your first trip to town since last August. Philly has been a little busy since then. There was the World Series and the parade and the ring ceremony and, man, it just hasn’t stopped. You probably saw most of it on TV since you didn’t have much else to do after September. You remember all the pageantry that goes along with being a world champion, right? No? Well, maybe you have some faded pictures of 1986 in a shoebox somewhere.

This might be overstepping our relationship, but can we tell you something? You guys seem awfully haggard. It looks like you haven’t slept much lately. Guess choking away two straight division titles will keep you up at night.

The rest is here.

Mailbag: What You Would Do With The New York Mets

Yesterday I asked…”So Mets Fans, What Exactly Is It You Want To Do?”

and you said:

Here’s what I would do…..like one former Jet head coach said ‘Play to win the game’

I’ve heard the arguments why David Wright shouldnt have bunted but enough with the psyche crap and win the game. Have him bunt and help the team win instead of worrying about how he would feel if he was asked to bunt. I was watching a Yankee Classic game the other day and Eddie Murphy on the Orioles bunted.

Now your big stars cant do that because of who they are and how much they make. ‘You cant have him bunt, you want him to try and hit a ball up the gap. You pay him to get the big hit.’ Really? The way he’s hitting? Another thing is that pitchers used to pitch until they got in trouble.

On the broadcast the other day Howie said that Jerry would pull Santana out early in games early in the season so he was fresh for when they needed him at the end of the season. Really? Maybe you wouldnt need him so big at the end if you let him pitch and win at the beginning. Now they pull guys out when there cruising along just so that they can put in the guy who has to pitch the 8th inning. Never mind that you have no idea if that next guy ‘has it’ or not that day. You have to do it, thats the way its set up. I understand you CAN do it that way but does it always HAVE to be that way? Can’t anyone manage a game the way they did 20 years ago? Isnt it an option anymore? I’m getting fed up with it. You cant even get thru a blowout win without using 4 pitchers and forget about a loss, you go thru 6 of them with pulling them out for pinch hitters and righty/lefty matchups never mind bringing the new guy in who cant find the plate and having to get someone else up. The bullpen is going to be toast by the All Star Game.

This team is so poorly managed and constructed. Most teams yesterday would have put a speedy guy in to pinch run after Sheffield got on in the 9th. We dont even have a guy to do that and rattle a pitcher. Jerry starts playing mind games ‘I wanted to break up Lindstrom’s rythym by bringing in Santos’ What? The guy loaded the bases in a heartbeat and you want to think its going to get him rattled by making him wait? You want that guy to stay rattled. I could go on and on. Thanks for letting me vent.

Re bullpen I hate when managers chase losses.  Willie was horrible at that.  I thought Joe Torre was really good at using his good guys when wins were on the table, and the scrubs on the other days.   Jerry needs one whipping boy who they torture in the 6-1 games…and let the dude pitch 5 innings and lose 13-1.  What’s the difference really?  Torre understood that.  Interestingly Joe Torre (who was available prior to the 2008 season when they brought Willie back) had a 2.5 game lead in the West prior to last night’s game.  (I’m cheating and writing on Thursday so I can sleep in).

2012 Philadelphia A’s

MLB Home Run.com Best Baseball Blogs wrote a cute piece about the A’s returning to Philadelphia in 2012.

It always kind of bugged me that nobody cares about this team or the great Jimmie Foxx.

No idea what prompted them to do this.

I’m still trying to decide what to do with the money I will make from inventing the holodeck.  I used to want to move the Dodgers back to Brooklyn, but now because of the Wilpons I kind of want to buy the Mets and build a new stadium that replicates the facade of Shea.

Mailbag: Acela Club, Mets Black Unis, Open Concourses

Catching up on the mailbag:

Re: “Howie Rose Rips Black Mets Uniforms Again“:

Leave the fashion statements to the Marlins. Wear your blue pinstripes at home, greys away, and put on your blue hates.

We’re the New York Mets, blue and orange. Not the new Hugo Boss line.

Re: “Inside The Acela Club“:

My husband and I recently ate at the Acela Club when we attended a Mets game. Views were nice, service was very annoying. Our waiter, named Yuri, was over-bearing, annoying, and pushy!! We were unable to enjoy our meal and scenery due to the annoyance of the nagging staff. Food was horrible. You are very limited, and very over priced… I would rather eat a Nathans hot dog for $7 then spend 82 on a crappy hamburger with raw french fries. Very upset with Citi Field Acela Club. SAVE UR MONEY AND TIME!!!! DONT GO.

Or…
We ate at the Acela club yesterday. Contrary to the previous poster, our service was excellent. We had a party of 4. The buffet was great, and we all ordered the cheeseburger, which was made to order and excellent. Garlic fries were to die for. Highly recommend visiting, even at $41 per person… it was well worth it for the experience.

DyHrdMET has left a new comment on your post “Sing the Anthem At Citi Field“:

any verb with the words “at Shea” sounds better than the same verb followed by “at Citi Field“.

– they’re on their feet at Shea
– it’s Opening Day at Shea
– a sold out crowd at Shea Stadium

And I can just hear Howie Rose saying the first two, and I can actually hear Bob Murphy saying the third.

and also from DyHrdMet a new comment on your post “Are Open Concourses A Bad Idea?“:

I was at the second game against Boston when it was blowing about 30-40 mph outside, and everything inside seemed like a wind tunnel. I don’t remember wind where I was at home last night.

And I figured out a while back that there’s no 8th inning sing-along unless we’re winning.

You may do well at the Shake Shack’s line at 5pm before the game before people start arriving.

Sad Yankee Fan has left a new comment on your post “Are There 16,000 Tickets To Every Yankees Game On …“:

What a disaster their whole ticket plan has been. All they had to do was to leave everyone where they were in the old stadium and raise prices by $25 on average. That’s about an extra 100 million at least in their pockets from last year. Great job by their outside consulting firm on ticket prices & relocation!!

Your New York Yankees Home Run Forecast From AccuWeather

I love that Accu Weather is doing this

Weather conditions tonight will not help carry balls hit to right field. Winds are expected to increase to 10 to 20 mph tonight, but they will shift from southeast to more or a southerly direction. A wind from this direction will tend to push lofty fly balls more to the left. Showers will also wander into the region tonight. Any rain will slow fly balls down a bit as well.

A test will come Friday evening, barring any untimely rain showers. Winds for the game are expected to swing around from the southwest to the west averaging 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. The winds should come more in line with the game on Saturday, April 18. Humidity levels may be somewhat higher than that of a couple of weeks ago.
