Can Someone Do Steroids Or Something?

This off-season has been awfully quiet.

The Mets and Yankees made a few pickups and since then there’s been silence.

There’s no looming strike nor contraction nor home run records being broken.   Randy Johnson could win 300 but that seems unexciting (even if he’s likely to be the last one).

Billy Martin isn’t around to get in a fistfight.

George Steinbrenner isn’t around to fire Girardi.

Bobby V isn’t around to wear a fake mustache.

It’s too cold for A-Rod to take his shirt off in Central Park, and even palling around with Madonna is boring.

Can someone do some steroids or something?  It’s a long, cold off-season and we could use some fuel for the fires.

Hire Singletary But The Rules Are Unfair

I love the 49ers.   I think Coach Singletary has done a fine job and it looks like he’s laid a good foundation for 2009.  I’m excited to see that the 49ers want to officially give him the head coach job.

What does bother me is the NFL’s Rooney Rule which requires teams to interview minority candidates.

Since Coach Singletary is a minority, the 49ers can go ahead and hire him without interviewing other candidates. Earlier this year the Rams wanted to hire Jim Haslett (then off to a promising start) but couldn’t because of the rule.

Haslett and Singletary had the same opportunity this season.   If the Rams still want Haslett they shoudln’t have to go through the charade of interviewing minorities, wasting their time, and then deciding they want Haslett.

Meanwhile in San Francisco, why should Singletary be allowed to get the job without the 49ers interviewing other candidates?  Maybe there’s someone even more qualified – why shouldn’t that person be given a fair chance to beat out Singletary for the job?   That candidate should have the same chance to get the 49ers job as the Rams job.

I understand why the rule was created, but it’s 2008.   I think the country has moved on (see recent election). It’s time the NFL do so too and let teams hire whoever they want.

1979 Mets Tribute

As I scoured youtube for something to get us through a long boring off-season, I found this:

Mets Having A Smart Day!

Wow first I read that the Wilpons don’t want Manny, now I read they aren’t going to buy into this World Baseball Classic nonsense.

Spring training is to get your players ready as a team.  Get your work in and don’t worry about wins and losses and see how the unit plays as one cohsesive force.  Having half your guys play against Mike Piazza and Italy is a waste of time.

Published: December 24, 2008

The Mets, citing Johan’s Santana’s recent knee surgery, have cast doubt on the Venezuelan pitcher’s participation in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

“We don’t want to have him be in the heat of the battle in early March when he’s coming off a minor surgery,” Minaya said. “It’s minor, but it’s still surgery. We will have to use precaution.”

Omar Wants Manny; Fortunately Wilpons Don’t

Skimming through the Star-Ledger today I read the Omar Minaya would like to add Manny Ramirez to the team.   Sure who wouldn’t want a slugging left-fielder?

I don’t and the Wilpons don’t.

If you ever were going to get this guy it was last summer when the Red Sox couldn’t wait to get rid of him.  It’s not now and I’m glad the Wilpons don’t want a guy like this on the team.

For all the whining over A-Rod being a 24+1 player when he flirted with the Mets way back when, Manny is the epitome of 24+1.   He openly dogged it in games because he was in a bad mood.  Is that who you want on your team – or would you rather half a Wally Backman or a Lenny Dykstra?

Just say no to Manny.
