Yankees Do Nice Thing

Blogging can get so darn negative that it’s nice to say something nice.

A-Rod and the Yankees hosted an 18 year old with terminal cancer who wanted just one more at bat.

MLB.com has the story  http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080701&content_id=3042462&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

A resident of Freedom, Pa., Challis first met the Yankees during their recent trip to Pittsburgh. He said he will keep his allegiance with the Pirates, but Challis wanted to see Yankee Stadium in its final year, and on Tuesday he got his wish.

John Challis, best of luck to you.

“If I was able to make one person realize how anything can be taken away in one swift swipe, then, sort of, my word got spread,” Challis said. “That makes me feel good.”

Interleague Missed Opportunity

With all the hype this year about the final season at Yankee Stadium, MLB has been going out of their way to honor the House That Ruth Built, yet I think they missed the boat on what could have been something really fun during interleague play.

The Red Sox have always been the Yankees great rivalry in the AL, but who has been there foe more often than not in the NL? Of course I’m referring to the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers have played more games in Yankee Stadium than any other NL team (35, all but 3 in the World Series). The rivalry between these teams in post season is legendary and MLB should have honored that.

Plus, you would have also had the added drama of Joe Torre returning to Yankee Stadium – talk about an instant ratings winner.

What was MLB thinking about when they scheduled the Padres and not the Dodgers?

For the record, the Mets have played 32 games at Yankee Stadium.

Arguing With A Yankee Fan About Schedule

Just got into it with a Yankee fan who is still upset that the Pirates didn’t switch to a day game last Thursday.

Please.

Again with the travel whining.  Pittsburgh to NYC is not a big deal.

Then he mentioned having to go from the Bronx to Flushing.   10 minutes on a bus is a big deal?

Why should the Pirates help the Yankees?

Why should the Pirates give up their big gate?

Why did the Yankees have to play Friday afternoon?  Play Sunday morning at 8am if you don’t want to be hassled on Friday.

Poor poor Yankees having to play a doubleheader after a night game.  Waaaaah.

Pedro Is A Four Inning Pitcher

I’m not second guessing – feel free to comb through this entire blog.  You will find posts such as “Pedro Exposed” (9 wins since June 6, 2006) and even yesterday between games I warned Jerry to warm somebody up while they batted in the fourth.

7.12 ERA!
42 hits in 30 innings.

A 5th starter at best – and only because this team lacks depth.   It’s becomming increasingly clear the Mets lack depth at starting pitching, infield and outfield.  They do have 5 catchers and apparently are/were deep at manager.

Other quick hits:

I wish they’d stop playing Subway Series games on beautiful beach weekends.  Keep these in May.

Heard Sterling say “someone must have turned on the radio” when Delgado’s walk up music played.   I guess he’s nnot a fan of that style of music.

Heard Sterling & Suzyn talk more about Chacon.  He’s coming to the Bronx.   Bet on it.

Too nice out to blog.   See y’all tomorrow.

Shawn Chacon and Rizzuto Park

Was listening to the Yankee announcers – I always like hearing a different perspective, which basically meant if the count went 1-0 on a Yankee batter that the Yanks were likely to win the World Series – and I heard Suzyn & Sterling talk at length about Shawn Chacon.

Basically the message was this:  he’s going to be a Yankee.

The Yankee radio machine made sure they I knew that:

Jeter likes him
Jeter stuck up for him
Cashman likes him
Chacon likes the Yankees and even said hi in Houston
And Jeter likes him
Sure you shouldn’t assault your GM but, well, Jeter likes him.

In other Yankee news, I see Phil Rizzuto park is going to be in…..Queens?   That doesn’t seem right, but then again the Joe DiMaggio Highway is in Manhattan and the Mets are moving to Dodger Stadium.
