Pete Alonso Trade Watch Watch: are we not trading Pete because Uncle Steve needs to be loved not win?

At this point, with Alonso having an OPS below .700 over the past couple months, they probably couldn’t get the haul you’d think for him, anyway. And then, how do you replace his 40-plus homers next year? The Mets don’t hit enough homers as it is.

More vitally, Cohen definitely did not spend $2.4 billion on this team to be booed in his hometown. So forget trading Alonso.

Jon – don’t worry about replacing the 40 homers.  A live body Major League first baseman will replace 25  of them, so you’re really stressing over 15 home runs over the course of 6 months.  And you can finish 4th without those home runs.  So your point is silly.

But the last part is worrisome – if we are not trading Pete because Steve needs to be loved more than he needs to win – well, we have a problem with ownership.   Steve, google “Nomar Garciaparra” and be BOLD.   This isn’t working.  You blew it when you didn’t sign Freddie Freeman….don;t double down worrying about 2 HRs a month out of a guy that really isn’t that good at baseball.

I’ve been shouted down for years about this, but more and more people are seeing it.  Pete is NEVER going to match his rookie year.  Smart GMs trade at peak value.  You have a diminishing asset here Steve….that you must understand, right?  Be bold.

You can find a body Steve.  Here’s one.  Who is Spencer Steer?  I don’t know, but he’s easily a replacement for Pete Alonso.

Do it.  While we still have time.

And while the biggest haul would come from moving Pete Alonso, the Mets do not plan to engage other clubs about the superstar first baseman.

Alonso is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season, and as one league source put it, “if they don’t feel like they are going to sign him, the offseason is a better time to talk about trades, because more teams would be involved.”

Long term followers of this blog know the Mets shoudl have traded Pete a long time ago at peak value, and that his value is only diminishing by the day.  They should have signed Freddie Freeman (I find MVPs are good to have on a team) but some of you are like OOOOOOO HOME RUNS IN BUNCHES and that seemingly makes Uncle Steve scared to risk his popularity.

So, hold on to Pete.  Watch another decade slip away.  Enjoy seeing the words IKE and DAVIS show up in articles again.  Don’t trade Pete….he might hit some home runs and stuff.

Anyway, when the Wilpons finally sell the team and we have a cool owner with an open wallet, he won’t be stupid enough to leave in charge. a man who once gave Matt Harvey $11,000,000 to pitch for Anaheim.  Nobody is that stupid.

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 14, 2023 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed first-round selection (32ndoverall) INF Colin Houck and second-round selection (56th overall) RHP Brandon Sproat. Both players will begin their professional careers at the Florida Complex League in Port St. Lucie, FL.

Houck, 18, was named the 2022-2023 Georgia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year after leading Parkview High School to the Class 7A State Finals in 2023. The Lilburn, GA native batted .487 with eight home runs, 50 RBI, 16 stolen bases and posted a .587 OBP this past season. The No. 12 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 21 prospect according to Baseball America, Houck became the fourth-ever player from Parkview High School selected in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft joining 12-year veteran OF Jeff Francouer (2002, 23rd overall), All-Star 1B Matt Olson (2012, 47th overall) and INF Josh Hart (2013, 37th overall).

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is also a three-star quarterback recruit and received several offers from Power 5 programs after throwing for 2,189 yards and 24 touchdowns during his senior season. Prior to signing with the Mets, Houck was committed to play baseball at Mississippi State.

Sproat, 22, was previously drafted by the Mets in the third round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft. The No. 54 prospect byMLB Pipeline and the No. 56 prospect by ESPN, Sproat was a Second Team All-SEC selection in 2023 after recording 134 strikeouts over 106.1 innings and held opposing batters to a .222 average. The Pace, FL native struck out 28 batters in four postseason starts this year, including 14 over two starts in the College World Series. In 56 career games over four seasons at the University of Florida, Sproat went 19-8 with a 4.27 ERA (106 ER/223.2 IP) and 242 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was the third Gator taken in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft joining OF Wyatt Langford (fourth overall) and RHP Hurston Waldrep (24th overall).

In addition, the Mets have also signed the following players: RHP Austin Troesser (4th round, University of Missouri), RHP Jack Wenninger (6th round, University of Illinois), RHP Noah Hall (7th round, University of South Carolina), INF Boston Baro (8th round, Capistrano Valley HS (CA), INF Nick Lorusso (9th round, University of Maryland) and Catcher Christian Pregent (10th round, Stetson University).
