Um, are the Mets putting marketing Matt Harvey ahead of a smart pitching rotation?

matt harvey t-shirt

I have been reading that the Mets may save Matt Harvey for the Home Opener.  None of us know what the future holds, but the source on that is Sandy Alderson so it’s not like it’s a fat guy blogging in his basement making things up.

However, unless I really suck at counting, that creates a glaring problem to me and makes me wonder if the Mets are putting marketing ahead of trying to win baseball games.

mets april 2015 schedule

Monday April 6 – Starter #1

Tuesday April 7 – no game

Wednesday April 8 – Starter #2

Thursday April 9 – Starter #3

Friday April 10 – Starter #4

Saturday April 11 – should be Starter #1 on normal rest

Sunday April 12 – If you start Starter #2 here he is on short rest.  So you need Starter #5

Monday April 13 – Should be Starter #2 on normal rest.

If you save Matt Harvey for the home opener, it seems to me that you either need a spot starter on Sunday, or you start #2 on short rest.  Either is crazy.

Why not pitch Matt on Sunday, and then let the rest of the rotation pitch on normal turns.

Playing it out…

Monday April 13 – Starter #2 on normal rest

Tuesday April 14 – Starter #3 on normal rest

Wednesday April 15 – Starter #4 on normal rest

Thursday April 16 – Starter #1 on normal rest

Friday April 17 – Starter #5 (the guy who started on Sunday) on normal rest.  It’s even Matt Harvey T-Shirt Night, so it even makes marketing sense!!!  They should market THIS night as Harveypalooza, not shoe-horn him into the home opener which doesn’t make baseball sense.

Saturday April 18 – Starter #2 on normal rest

Sunday April 19 – Starter #3 on normal rest

Then on the 20th you can bump your 4 starter (who is really your “last” starter and only the 4 because you held Harvey back)

And then go 1-5-2-3 in turn on normal rest.

If you throw Harvey on Monday you screw with everyone’s routine AND you need the extra arm on Sunday.

Please point out to me where I suck at math or what I don’t get.  I keep looking at this and it makes no sense to me, so I assume I am crazy and this is a stupid post.  I really hope I’m the one being stupid, not the Mets.

As for the rotation, I would make Colon the #1 and give him Opening Day.  He led the team in win last year and he’s a veteran.  That way you don’t put that mental “Opening Day” pressure on deGrom or Wheeler.  Let one of those guys pitch the second game, and that same person gets the home opener.  Harvey should pitch on Sunday.

Pedro Martinez looks fun to hang out with

There’s just something about this tweet I like.

Now what’s interesting is that if say some other MLB pitcher tweeted the same picture I would probably make a comment about it and even comment on his career record.  I was no fan of Pedro on the Mets (too many 4 inning starts and I didn’t like the way he ran out of Boston) but this pic is cool.   Pedro has “it” and not everyone has “it.”  You have to have “it” if you’re gonna tweet like this.

Pedro Martinez was 219-100 in 476 career appearance.

It’s Not About The Wins – It’s About The Fire

So Sandy thinks the Mets can win 89 games in 2015.

That’s nice.

And it’s relatively safe.  It stays below that magic 90 number (remember that from last year?)

And that’s the problem in Flushing right now – everything is “safe.”

Worse than the 89 win prediction was Sandy’s other comment

“And so we’re comfortable going into spring training…”

we’re comfortable?

COMFORTABLE?

Comfortable means no further movement is needed.

Comfortable is a loser’s mentality.

Comfortable doesn’t get you the trophy.

And that in a nutshell is the attitude in Flushing…or more precisely, the lack of an attitude.

There’s no fire in anyone’s belly.  And when glimmers of that show up, it’s snuffed out.

Shannon has often said that Matt Harvey should just be Joe Namath and own the swaggering, cocky, playboy image.  New York loves that.

Never going to happen with this team, and I am sure that message has been sent.

Their captain – who once was a possible HOFer and now might barely be Hall of Garvey – is blah.  A nice guy to be sure but no observable fire.  Leo Durocher had something to say about that.
The guy with the most fire and drive they let get away in free agency without getting anything in return.
Nobody on this team – nobody – would be able to hang with 86. On or off the field.
And as I see it right now, nobody – either currently in uniform or in the front office – would be able to lead this team to success.
Safe won’t get you a trophy.
But I guess it will get you a mall.

This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The “5 Metal Songs That Best Describe The Mets Rebuilding Years” Edition

First off I would like to say it’s an honor for me be a part of the Mets Police family. I have been reading this site probably since late ’07 and I have been a fan of the diverse content – whether it has been Shannon’s railing on about the obscured views of Citi Field, the black uniforms …. or Mediagoon’s extensive jersey collection.

If you know me then you are aware that I have two major passions in my life. Those two passions are obviously the Mets and heavy metal music. When you think about it these two interests go together hand in hand, whether it was Mike Piazza coming to the plate with the strains of Iron Maiden’s “The Prisoner” blaring from the public announcement system or the fact that metal bands such as Twisted Sister, Exodus, Metallica have pledged their allegiance to this team whether by attending games or by wearing Mets gear during photo sessions.

But since the Mets epic back to back collapses in ’07 and ’08 coupled with the Madoff scandal there has been aura of doom and gloom along with the anger and feelings of disenfranchisement that is generally synonymous with the heavy metal genre.

So I have come up with a list of the five metaL/hardcore songs that best describe the this current Mets rebuilding era.

5. “Malfunction” by The Cro-Mags. This NYHC staple is the best comparison to the disconnect between the Mets ownership and their fan base with the classic lyrics “Maybe I’d be better off talking to a wall / because talking to you makes no sense at all !”

4. “5 Year Plan” by D.R.I. Because you know this rebuilding era has taken the better part of 5 years.

3. “Born To Lose” by Motorhead . This sums up the Jerry Manuel era in a nutshell.

2. “Years Of Decay” by Overkill.

and lastly “Season In The Abyss” by Slayer. What list wouldn’t be complete with Satan’s house band. This song encompasses the forlorn state of the Mets Fan’s psyche, helplessness, depression and all around anger at the state of the team.

I have to hope that this upcoming season will finally put us back in the post season – or at least back to some modicum of respectability. Do you agree ? Is there a song – or songs that you feel are a better representation ?

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!!

Matt Harvey News: Matt Harvey wants to make sure you know he drives fancier cars than you do (Matt Harvey)

matt harvey cars

Looks like someone is taking the “Full Namath” advice tonight.  What, no supermodels?  Is he driving all four of these?

Matt is 12-10 with a 2.39 ERA in 36 career starts.

What do you suppose the odds are of Matt Harvey playing his entire career with the Mets while having Scott Boras representing him?
