Oh no, Murph drank the Wilpon Kool Aid

Newsday quotes All Star Daniel Murphy as saying….

I think 2014, we have a chance to play meaningful games in September

via Daniel Murphy would be amenable to contract extension – Newsday.

…as if not being buried on September 3rd is somehow an accomplishment.  As if winning 85 games will somehow make this season a “success.”

It has been 28 years.  The goal should be to win the World Series.  No more excuses about Jason Bay’s contract or Madoff (they are building TWO construction projects next to Citi Field) or the endless rebuilding process.

Meaningful Games In September is a “we tried” mentality.

Which leads us to a Panel Discussion at the 2015 Queens Baseball Convention.  Jason Fry and I had the twitter version of the “meaningful games” discussion on twitter yesterday and I suggested we turn it into a panel.  Jason will slay me with words while I sit their like a pig saying basically what I said above.  Should be fun.

Get your tickets to the QBC Below and we’ll see you on January 10th at McFadden’s Citi Field.

Terry talks up the Mets Fake Pennant Race

terry

“We’ve got 67 games to go and we’ve got 39 in our division,” Collins said. “If we end up having a good record against our division, I think we’re going to be in the mix at the end.”

via Collins: Don’t be shocked if Mets are in playoff race | New York Post.

Look, I know Terry can’t say, “Hey this thing has been over for a month because I let the team get 11 games under” but you know who else probably has 39 games in the division?  Everyone.

I want to go to the beach so I will do a quick version of The Math.  The Nationals play the Braves six more times.  Those are six days where you can’t really make up ground because someone is going to win.  Now start doing that with all the Wild Card permutations and…..yeah there are few windows of opportunities left.

I will be curious to see what happens here.  The fan base was all hopped up last week.  We’ll know on Monday if everyone is suicidal again or if Fake Pennant Race fever is real.

Oh by the way, after a hot week the Mets are 5 games under .500

Announcing the 2015 Queens Baseball Convention. Jan 10th at @McFaddensCiti

WHAT IS THE QUEENS BASEBALL CONVENTION?

A mid-winter gathering of fans of baseball, held in Queens. Our design is a combination of “Fan Fest” meets “Comic Con.”

The spirit of the day is for the fans to get together, celebrate baseball in Queens, and to bring the kiddies and bring the wife.

Events will range from appearances by players, panels, trivia, mascot appearances…and a whole lot more.

WHAT WAS 2014 LIKE?

Attendees included Ron Darling, Ed Kranepool, Art Shamsky and Mr. Met. You can see a recap of QBC14 here.

WHAT WILL BE AT QBC15?

We are working on the particulars now, but it’s safe to assume players, panels and mascots.

WAIT YOU WANT ME TO BUY TICKETS AND YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHO IS COMING?

We’re not trying to be annoying. We are trying to make this bigger and better than last year. We could hand in the same type of event as last year and it would be great again.

The hope here is that we now have credibility with you, and by selling advance tickets we will have more working capital to grow the event…specifically players.

OK, I GET IT. WHEN AND WHERE IS IT?

January 10, 2015 at McFadden’s Citi Field.

HOW MUCH TO GET IN?

$35

ARE AUTOGRAPHS INCLUDED?

We are working with player reps but the plan is that like last year your admission will get you two “free” autographs.  We will make sure the players are of similar caliber to last year (which were Darling and Kranepool.)

We may be able to get more players to come if we work out some other scenarios.  So maybe “Joe Player” comes, does some panels, and if you want his autograph too you can go to a table and pay some amount.  And if autographs (beyond the two mentioned above) don’t interest you then you don’t have to spend extra, but the player is still there and maybe does some panels.

This is the part where you guys buying in advance off good faith and last year’s reputation helps us make it bigger and better by giving us working capital to reinvest in this part.

I LIKE THAT LOGO.  THAT WOULD LOOK GOOD ON A T-SHIRT.

We’re kicking things off with a ticket and tee offer.  $45 gets you in the door and you get your t-shirt day on the day of the event (extra $2 for larger sizes.).

COOL. I’M EXCITED. HOW DO I BUY TICKETS?

Right here!

Mets seem to think attendance will go up.

The Newsday article linked here is “Mets expect Citi Field attendance to increase in second half.”  First the quote then my take….

“I think we can grow attendance regardless, as long as the team is competitive,” DePaoli said. “It doesn’t have to be a 100-win team. It can’t really be a 50-win team . . . We’d like to think even if the team [record] just stayed status quo our attendance is going to go up a little bit by the end of the year.”

via Mets expect Citi Field attendance to increase in second half – Newsday.

I don’t have access to the data they do, but I do have eyes and I am not seeing it.

Now sure if the Fake Pennant Race goes well more people will come out.  But to me it sure feels like fewer people are going and less buzz in the ballpark than ever.

A post All Star Game west coast swing has historically been awful for this franchise. That doesn’t mean that it has to be awful this time, but everyone needs to calm the bleep down after one good week.  This team was 11 games under .500 ten days ago, so let’s not act like the 1986 Mets are back.

Time will tell, but I will bet a dollar on the Mets kidding themselves and/or Newsday on this one.
