Wright, Reyes, Jeter and the next 25 years in this town
All this Retire 8 discussion has got me thinking.
Let’s say for a second that Wright isn’t a superstar and that Reyes either doesn’t deserve Crawford money or maybe he should be dealt to start the road on some sort of rebuild.
What is the value of Wright and Reyes over the next 25 years.
In a market where you compete with Yankees Incorporated for a buck, and believe it or not you’ve been able to own the town at least twice, what’s the long term value of Wright and Reyes as lifelong Mets.
Yankees Incorporated trotted Joe D out there for years, went through a Whitey phase, Yogi came back…and now 5 year player Reggie Jackson is Mr. Yankee.
Mr. Yankee for the next 25 will be their captain Derek Jeter. No matter how bad things go in the Bronx, they’ll be able to trot out The Captain, and the other Core 4 (overlook that whole Astros thing) and sell another generation on Pride and Tradition.
In Queens? You’re lucky if Seaver leaves the vineyard. Mike Piazza has some potential and could be around more.
There’s some guys from 25 years ago who we all love but I can also picture them in the uniforms of the Cardinals, Expos, Phillies, Blue Jays and drat even the Yankees.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were two guys who played their entire careers side by side and were 1-2 in all the career statistics? What’s the value in selling that? Does the story in Queens have to be occasional good years surrounded by disappointment and disasters?
Nobody tells stories of Doug Flynn and Steve Henderson. The guys that replace Reyes and/or Wright could very easily have Dan Norman careers.
As I have been saying of late, the story of the franchise is what the Mets want it to be. From the upper deck, let it be about Wright and Reyes from 2004 until 2020something.
