Mets feeding off larger-than-life Pete Alonso
Alonso thoroughly enjoys being a larger-than-life figure in a larger-than-life town. It’s one of the best things the Mets have going for them at a time when a lot of things are going right.
Pete does tend to look really good for like 4 games now and then. He’ll hit three home runs in a short burst. Keith Hernandez will gush over him on TV. The media declares that Pete is back and he’s carrying the team. Then we get the two week spurts like the one we are in now.
My question to the Mets continues to be – hey what happens if one of those two week droughts happens in October some year. Yes, I know it’s a ridiculous premise to think the Mets would play in October, but wouldn’t you rather have better all around players?
They should also take their chances with Alonso, who has five homers and 10 RBIs since his dazzling show of power at the derby. You might say that’s why they pay him the big bucks, except that they don’t pay him the big bucks.
Case in point. Pete had a good week and Ian went to the Pete Worship altar. That’s a week where I took crap from everyone but guess what – I stick to my own narratives and Pete has 24 HRs here on August 11th.
Ike Davis had 20 HRs on 8/11/12 on way to 32. This race is way tighter than it should be Pete.
