Impossible Poll: Polo grounds slightly more popular than Mercury

This morning I swapped out the impossible poll (if you’re reading this via email or google reader you’ll need to visit the main page metspolice.com) to let you decide if the Mets are done/fine/in big trouble.

Closing out the previous poll – Shea Stadium was by far the most popular home of the Mets with 84% of the vote.   Citi Field was second with 21% (a championship will fix that) and the Polo Grounds (13%) barely edged out Mercury (12%)

For those of you not in the know, the Mets have announced they will be moving to Mercury no later than the 2021 season, and have already announced the design for the black uniforms.

Hey, THAT explains everything.  The Mets wear black to gradually introduce their new color scheme.  Like how the Marlins stopped wearing “Florida” this season in anticipation of becoming the “Miami Marlins” next year (or is that the Miami Los Marlins).

In all seriousness, if you are relatively new to the site, the Mercury Mets recap is one of my favorite pieces, I think you’ll enjoy.  I’m looking to the Mercury Series against the cross-planet Mercury Fire.  Go read.

Is selling your Subway Series tickets a sin?

I’m not going to the games this weekend.

Oh, I have tickets (multiple pairs actually) and I posted them all on Stubhub.

Is that wrong?

My experience has been that those games are best enjoyed on a big screen television after a nice day out in the sun.

Something about the subway games brings out the worst in Mets fans. A bunch of drunks looking to fight with the knuckleheads from uptown.

I like going to the games with either Junior or Beloved Daughter (I expect her black jersey to arrive tonight and the smile will outweigh my blog being exposed as fraudulent). I don’t enjoy these games when the “cheering” turns to swearing.

Then let’s consider the financial aspect. I have already sold one pair for triple what I paid. That offsets two other games from my 15 game plan (now a 14 game plan). That’s basic economics.

I am a capatalist who has a nice funding scheme with my Sunday Phillies plan (phi-bos this week, ka-ching). Oh and someone gave me $100 to watch Boston-NYY tonight. All that let’s me do the things I actually care about for free.

However I feel odd not going, at least to the Saturday game.

Sunday 8:05 can rot in hell. That’s one of the first things I will change when I become comissioner of baseball.

That’s my take. Sell em. How about you?

Why Jerry gets 10 more games

Good morning. This is one of those days that I have trashed my plan for the day because one again the storyline has changed and I try to be in touch with my fellow fans.

Today is about the manager.

I don’t think there’s a move to be made here. Well, there’s a move but they won’t make it so let’s walk through the options:

Bobby V: is there anything out there that makes you think the Wilpons want to spend the money and/or deal with him? Not happening.

Backman: it seems someone has decided Wally has to spend some time in purgatory before he gets the reigns. There’s a good shot he is the manager after our 2010 interim manager.

That brings us to the Bob Melvin, Oberkfell, and who ever else you want to throw in there scenario.

Let’s say Omar draws his guns this morning. That leaves “Bob Melvin” four games to get his feet wet before facing the media circus that is the Yankees, with TBA as the 4th starter and TBD as the 5th taking turns this week.

Then manager Melvin gets to deal with another circus that is the Phillies, and the new angle of the “cheating.”

What happens is Melvin has a bad streak? Season over and fans pack it in before Dave Howard’s warm weather arrives to save the gate.

Nope, Jerry gets 10 more games. If the ten are a disaster, change sells hope and hope might sell tickets.

Speaking of selling tickets, how do you not call Pedro? Let’s see what he has.

I killed him on this site for two years but there’s a big difference between pretending he is an ace and decding he might be better that R.A. Dickey.

A media circus is coming one way or another. Bobby can handle it, heck maybe even make it worse, but he’ll keep the fans engaged – and always remember the baseball game is the mechanism by which the Wilpons sell hot dogs, tshirts and fuel a tv network. Spend a few bucks and it might come back. Save a few and you might pay for it into 2011.

I hadn’t heard of this Reggie Jefferson – Mike Piazza accusation before

Was I asleep when the book about Clemens “The Rocket That Fell to Earth” included a shot at Mike Piazza?

My “Mike Piazza” google tracker caught this story in Faster Times…and some additional Googling shows Deadspin mentioned it last March.  Maybe I just forgot?

Anyway, Faster Times has some things to say…

As for me, I’m not going to accuse anyone of anything.  I’ll stand by my previous statements that there are some former Mets who could turn up on a list and I won’t be the least bit surprised.

Not surprised the Mets lost

I just got in touch with the world for the first time today and I have to say I kinda expected the Mets to lose today.

This morning I did the Actual Athletics, followed by some neighborhood soccer, and then I decided I’d rather read some magazines than listen to Howie.  Around 3:30 I started thinking about the Mets and realized this article would either be titled “not surprised the Mets lost” or “kinda surprised the Mets won.”

I’m not trying to be panicky WFAN caller (I’m even blogging outside today, I got out of the basement) but I sensed a disturbance in the force.    Nothing made me think they’d salvage one game of the four.  Not in a negativity way, just in “wasn’t feeling it” way.

So here we are on May 16th, the hot-streak long since passed, Jerry picking lineups out of a hybrid cap, Ollie sent to the bullpen just in time for Niese to get injured and here’s what we all knew all winter…

The Mets don’t have enough starting pitching.

They went twice through the rotation looking pretty good, but the law of averages crept in and everyone is pitching down to their ability.

Before we go killing Omar, pick your agrument.  We could look at the injured Jason Marquis, or we could look at John Lackey at 4-2.  Ben Sheets 2-3 with a 5.70, Joel Piniero is 2-4, and I can’t remember who else we armchair GM’s tossed about.

This NL East is very winnable.  Omar has changed his plans and is now accompanying the team to Atlanta.  2 in Atlanta, 2 in Washington and then it’s Yankees and Phillies time.

If I’m Jerry I’m asking Omar three times if I should get on the flight to Milwaukee on the night of the 27th.

Start the Jerry Watch again.
