An A-Plus For Mets Yearbook 1971!

I absolutely loved Mets Yearbook 1971 and it is exactly what the team
and SNY need to do more of (and less Chris Carlin filler). This was
the old "channel 9 rain delay film" that I have mentioned off and on
since I started the blog.

How about the cap Kiner wore. It was blue with the Mets baseball logo
on it. Never saw that!

Hopefully people will appreciate Bud Harrelson after seeing the
clips. Bud's goal was to win multiple World Series!n stole 28 bases –
you do that at SS these days and people love you.

The Mets used to have something called Old Timers Day which featured
Brooklyn Dodgers and also something called Banner Day! I hope David
Howard watched.

The mayors trophy game! The mets used to play the yanks midseason and
it was a big deal.

So nice to hear Bob Murphy's voice.

Typing as I watch – cool to see Kiner coaching. He is wearing a road
uni with the baseball cap, but Singleton wearing the home pins. Both
uniforms look better than what is worn now. Note the blue was deeper.

The Mets had some "prospect" named Kenny Martinez. I have never heard
of him. Awesome.

Looks like the Mets made a great trade for '72 by getting Jim
Fregosi! They hyped him pretty hood in the film.

Odd for me to see Tim Foli at third since I knew him only as a SS when
he came back to the Mets.

Really not much about Seaver in this, nor Gil.

Tug had 11 wins and 8 saves. Some other guy who I never heard of had
12 saves. Seaver 20 wins but 21 complete games! The game has changed.

Love the deep blue jackets. Why can't they just ho back to his look?

Loved seeing the old scoreboard messages. The text board was covered
up by a Bud ad for 25 years at the end.

Thanks SNY, keep it coming!!!! Right now I feel the best I have
about the team than I have in months. Next week is 1984 which is my
personal favorite season.

Alternate New York Mets Caps Day 28

Another white cap, not as nice looking as yesterday (reposted below) but I think this cap is important.   Compare the two caps, clearly the one on the bottom is better looking.   Now ask yourself why?

The reason is that the drop shadow doesn’t work.   It’s the difference between a New York Giants cap looking nice and a Charlie Samuels Special looking horrible.

The Mets should lose the dropshadow on all their uniforms.   It ruins the pinstripes, it makes the black look dumb.  Let the stupid hockey team at MSG look like idiots….clean up the Mets.

Carlos Beltran In Patchless Jersey

Was nice to see a Mets jersey without a Citi Field patch on it…this was Beltran yesterday.   That Mets logo on the left sleeve looked a little big to me on HDTV last night but I think that’s just me and not an actual uniform change.

David Howard On 2010 New York Mets Ticket Prices: Haven’t Heard Outrage

Please do the right thing and click on Burt Hubbuch’s article in the Post about this…Burt comes out swinging….but here’s the money quote.

Mets spokesman David Howard said, “It’s very consistent with what we said in the beginning. Obviously, the ‘average’ means there is some higher and some lower, but the average is 10 percent. We haven’t heard outrage about this.”

Read more: in the New York Post

Burt also has one of the best twitter feeds, and there’s usually tons of cool info between like 4 and 6pm:  http://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets

I do really encourage you to click the links if you enjoy this site.  This all works better for everyone if we share traffic.

So fine, I think there’s other things we could completely outraged about this…but we should let Mr. Howard know that it’s not nothing (perhaps there are some blogs or sports radio stations with nothing to talk about except a Jets game) and oh by the way Mets Police brought this up on October 3rd so I’m not sure why everyone is just noticing now that Dave spun the ticket prices story.

The pitching wonders (Seaver) works did not come swiftly – 07.24.72 – SI Vault

July 1972, Seaver talks about a sore arm:

After a few days, the shock of his injury diminished and Seaver’s voice lost its panic. It became curt and passionless as he forced himself to approach his injury as he did all things relating to his talent—as an experience to be understood and absorbed for future use. His questions to the doctor became less pleas and more interrogations. “Which muscle is bruised? How did it get bruised? Will it get worse if I throw?” And finally, when it had healed and he had once again taken his place on the mound to pitch batting practice, he would be able to say: “I don’t know many parts of my shoulder and arm, but I know this muscle, the teres major. It was bruised because I began throwing too hard too soon. I had not taken into consideration that I am getting older. I can’t proceed during the spring at the same pace I did at 23. I have to expect my body to break down a little with each year. After all, I’ve pitched almost 1,400 innings in five years. I can’t go on forever without a sore arm. I just have to be more careful in the future.”
