Mets Police Morning Laziness: I really enjoyed the Mets game!

SLACKISH REACTION:  I really enjoyed the Mets game, even though they lost.  (1) Todd Zeile is bringing out the best in Gary.  (2) The game was under three hours.  (3)  Pete Alonso has become a thing – I was actually like “oh cool, Pete Alonso is going to bat in the 9th.”   THAT is what baseball needs.  Badly.  They should be marketing the heck out of this guy and creating some bullshit rivalry with Judge.

Now…as awesome as Alonso has been….let’s just enjoy it.  I’m looking at you dear reader, and really at you over there in the t-shirt section.  Let’s just appreciate that it’s been a fun 6 weeks.  Let’s not put him in the Hall of Fame.  Let’s not compare him to Pujols or someone.  Let’s not make him The Next Somebody.  Let’s not start doing big heads or t-shirts or dressing up like Polar Bears.  Let’s just let him be Pete Alonso and let’s enjoy THAT.

Todd Zeile sounds very good in the SNY booth and is getting more out of Gary Cohen

I finally had an opportunity to take in a fair amount of Todd Zeile in the booth and…..I really like him!

TIME OUT BEFORE WE CONTINUE.   I love Ron Darling.   I want Ron healthy and back in the booth.  I wish the best for Ron Darling.  I can both love Ron Darling and also enjoy the work of Todd Zeile.

I think it may be as simple as “Gary hasn’t heard all of Todd’s stories ten times” and that it’s fresh and new but…..it’s fresh and new!  If you watched Wednesday afternoon’s game you heard Gary light up a little as Todd told Bobby Valentine stories.

I’ve found that Gary is much more conversational with Todd than he is when it’s just Gary/Ron – and right now I think the Gary/Todd booth is a better listen than Gary/Ron, and I think that’s because of Gary.   When it’s Gary/Ron we get Bad Gary – the monotone version that is just running the program.   You may also notice we’ve had better home run calls this week – something in Todd brings out the best in Gary.  Will it last?  I don’t know – but right now here are the power rankings…

  1.  Gary/Keith/Ron
  2. Wayne/Keith/Ron
  3. Gary/Keith
  4. Gary/Todd
  5. Gary/Ron

I have not yet heard enough Gary/Keith/Todd – but my brief sense of it was that it wasn’t clicking….but small sample size.

Sterling or Scully: a very good usage of To The Wall by Gary Cohen

As you know, I often criticize Gary Cohen for lazy calls where he autopilots “to the track, to the wall….” (aka Trackwalling) but here’s is an excellent example of when announcer SHOULD say to the wall.  As we will see, that’s exactly where the ball is (as opposed to in the third deck) and it is unclear if the ball will go out…

Verdict: Scully

Gil Must Go: 1969 Mets act like the Reds are stacked with Hall of Famers

I really hate the Reds.  How are we losing to these guys?   Can Kiner stop acting like Pete Rose, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench are Hall of Famers?  Bench wouldn’t even start on the Mets.  The only guy that isn’t overrated over there is Lee May.

Sucks that my man Gary G didn’t have it today but hey if you can’t go 9 and you want to trust your 8 innings of hard work to Gil managing a bullpen, good luck.

Gliding Ed Charles is batting .133 now.   Can we stop with this?
