Baseball rosters to go to 26 because managers won’t add bullpen and make the game even worse

Reports are that MLB (oh and millennials, its Emm Ell Bee, not THE MLB…stop with that you sound stupid when you do that)….where was I…

Reports are that MLB will expand rosters to 26 in 2020.

That is a TERRIBLE idea.  You don’t think teams are just going to add a bullpen guy, which will make the middle innings even more unwatchable than they are now?  Of course everyone will carry a 14th pitcher, because that’s what baseball needs.

In better news, the September rosters may go from 40 to 28.  That is very sensible.  I wonder what unintended consequences that will have – will teams just release veterans so they can look at kids?  So instead of nice send-offs you just let a guy go on August 31st?  I think baseball might need some sort of hockey-like roster solution….say 40 on the roster but only 28 can play…something like that.

FOUR posts after 10pm?  What is going on at Mets Police?  Oh, this is what happens when I have to Actually Work (TM).  Booo work.  Boooo.  Click on ads people!!!!

Whoa Mets, that’s some big shade you threw at Dom The Alarm Smith

Whoa Mets…it’s one thing if a jerky fat blogger tries to stick Dom Smith with the nickname The Alarm….it’s totally different when you guys throw shade like this…

Long time readers may remember the Hodges Moment (also known as Howie Rose’s worst moment) when Mickey Callaway established himself as the new Gil Hodges by benching his prize prospect who had overslept and basically wasting an entire year of Dom Smith’s development.

But suddenly the guy is hitting in Spring Training and we’re gonna drag out that he’s sleeping better?    SHAAAAAADE.

Anyway, cut the crap Mets.  We all know Dom can hit at Todd Frazier levels and  Dom will still be the Opening Day 1B.  There’s zero chance you accelerate Alonso.

Pondering this weird Mets Jessica Mendoza move

I’m bewildered by this Jessica Mendoza hire.  Let’s hear from Wags…

OK, so like as you listen, some of that seems to make sense. Except it just feels weird. Yeah, she won at a high level. Yeah, she sees talent. I guess. But it feels weird.

AND THERE’S THAT WHOLE CAA THING.

When my friend texted this to me this morning I didn’t know what it was about. I was like – Oh cool, bringing her in will make the booth better. I know we all pray at the altar of GKR, but surely she’d be a good 4th person to rotate through – I’d sure rather have GJR than one of those boring Gary and Ron nights….and let’s be honest…I know we aren’t supposed to say this because he’s a nice guy but let’s all be honest because we all think it….she’d be way better than Gelbs.  Way better.

But no, the Mets didn’t do that.  They did another Out Of The Box hire.  On the one hand In The Box hasn’t worked since I was a teenager, so sure let’s try Out of The Box….except….maybe that’s crazy?

Deep down do you trust this organization?  I don’t trust Wags yet.  All I see is him bringing in his friends….and I dunno….not sure what’s even going on.  Are we building the best organization possible or are we hooking up the gang from Cano to Mendoza?  I don’t know.

One thing that I do know….if the Mets open like 7-2…not crazy talk with the Nationals and Marlins on the schedule….there will be all kinds of articles about….wait for it…

WAGS NEW CULTURE!!!

Yes it will be time for the annual NEW CULTURE articles.  Wags, a genius with his out of the box hires and his great roster moves blah blah blah.  Just dust off the articles from Mickey Hodges, or even Omar Minaya and Los Mets.  It’s the same stories, just new details.

I dunno gang, this move….on the back of the weird Leiter move….it all feels off.

Meanwhile, who is the starting OF again Wags?   How about addressing the real problems instead of playing Wag(s) the Dog with what passes for Mets media these days.

I dunno.  I don’t know.

Mailbag: could CAA be looking to buy the Mets?

I got a tweet…

…hmmm. At first glance that seems ridiculous. But the notion stayed with me.

There’s a lot to unpack here…

First, you can only buy something that is for sale.  However, you may remember the time David Einhorn almost bought into the Mets. So maybe the Wilpons would like some additional money.

You may also remember that competing agency WME bought the UFC.  So I guess it’s not an insane notion that an agency might like to own some sports properties.

I tried to look up some rules about owning MLB teams, and I came across MLBPA Rule 20 (page 96) which appears to prevent agencies from owning a team….the bold is mine….

(b) LOANS TO AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH PLAYERS. No Club, or owner, stockholder, officer, director or employee (including manager or player) of a Club, shall, directly or indirectly, loan money to or become surety or guarantor for a player of any other Club in any League, nor be an agent or representative of any player in any League.

Furthermore, I believe MLB ownerships have to be approved by the other owners, and my opinion is that the owners and player’s union would lose their minds if a talent agency tried to buy a team.  I could be wrong.

So no, I do not think CAA is trying to buy the Mets.  Now to give a Sandy Alderson answer, you specifically asked if there is a chance…as Sandy might say, it is conceivably possible.  Even if prohibited, I can imagine it. Lol.

However, say CAA were able to place an influential insider within the Mets organization.  That person could help steer the Mets to do business with all sorts of CAA clients, all on the up and up.  That could be a beneficial relationship for all parties.  Something to think about.

Thanks for the tweet Joe, but my answer is no, I do not think CAA is trying to buy the Mets.
