The Not-Bob Murphy Mets Sponsorname Broadcast Booth

It’s bothering me every time I hear Howie Rose mention the Sponsorname Broadcast Booth.

Is/Was the Radio booth at Citi Field not named for Bob Murphy?

I know at Shea it was.  I know the TV Booth is/was named for Kiner as recently as the Mets Opening Day Kiner Press Release which mentions it.

I understand that the Mets are a business designed to sell us merchandise and get us to buy tickets.  I understand that WFAN wants to make money….

…but couldn’t Howie just as easily use the Sponsorname Microphone or fill out a Sponsorname Scorecard or something?

What about Bob?  There’s other ways to make a buck and this one is really easily fixable.  Don’t diss Bob or I will start floating the Curse of Bob Murphy theory.  Dear WFAN salesperson…take a long hard look at this photo.  Just sponsor something else.

  1. I have pics of it from my tour in 2009 but I’m sure that the radio booth was named for Murph. The TV booth is also the Ralph Kiner booth – that’s odd

  2. That’s an FAN thing. Just like MSG has the GEICO booth or something like it. The actual booth is and always will be Bob Murphy. Not the Mets fault what stupid name FAN wants to give it.

  3. The game has come full circle, the sponsorship rights in baseball were everywhere before the 60’s and 70’s when it lulled.

The physical thing as Randy points out has not changed, I would argue though that the FAN and the Sponsor being more intelligent would do something more along the lines of X is a proud sponsor of the Bob Murphy Broadcast Booth at CitiField. And then invest some time and energy into a small digital media display of who Murph was, what he means to the franchise etc. It would do the deed of keeping Murph top of mind and aware to todays 140 character challenged fans as well as give the sponsor more value than mere words listlessly falling from Howie’s lips.

        1. It is the advertising sponsor too, they need to think about this and not just buy media air time. This is my line of work, and all too often marketing departments and their agencies just take the easy way our versus making the max effort to get their true money’s worth on their investment.

  4. This is horrendous, and we need to keep harping on it. To name the radio booth after a Mets icon, and then to prostitute it out to some low rent advertiser like a boiler company? Completely unacceptable.

  5. that is the way the corprate world is today.
to change the name of a person who has passed away to a corprate name is terrible.

example, jack murphy stadium(named after his brother)is now a corprate name and they did the same thing to joe robbie in florida.

that’s why i will never call the new stadium in flushing y0u-know-what field.

for bill shea’s memory, i still call it shea stadium forever.

I was watching the dodgers- giants game last night.
announcer dwayne kuiper slipped and said “the mets lost to the rockies tonight at shea stadium”
    it sounded nice.

  6. Makes me think that they held the whole booth-naming ceremony to use Murph to take advantage of sentimental mets fans. Otherwise, why would they sell that name to any johnny-come-lately sponsor?

  7. I remember Bob was very philosophical when his brother Jack had his name stripped off the stadium in San Diego.
However I feel bad for his lovely wife Joye.

    1. hello ajp
thank you for the nice words about bob murphy.
although i did not know him on a personal basis i spent time chatting with him. between 1972 up to the last time he broad cast mets games in san francisco. we talked more about life as much as base ball. his wife joye was philsophical andkind as well.

it is just the memory of people and the reason why they have stadiums andeven broadcast booth’s named after them that should never be changed or altered.
