1986 Newspapers: Mets Clinch the East

I’ve mentioned on here before that my Mom was a huge Mets fan.  Well, among the newspapers she saved in her basement were almost every paper related to the 86 team.  As we are reminiscing about that team this month, let’s look at how the various papers covered the team’s clinching, playoffs, and World Series.

Today, we’ll look at the NL East clinching, first the Daily News

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I was a teenager during that time and now I wish I would have saved some of those newspapers myself.

  2. How nice would it be to read those headlines again soon!….Brings back great memories!

  3. On the second Post cover, you see “George: Amazin’s Own NY”…that’s right…Steinbrenner, in some reverse psychology to anger his own team, accurately stated the Mets own NY. He further tried to steal their thunder by penning a column in the NY Daily News during the World Series. Amazing what that guy got away with…after game two he told the Mets “welcome to the AL East.” Keith was furious…and the Boss wound up eating his words.

    1. Steve, good eye there. George did put pen to paper, not only for the World Series but for the NLCS as well, though he was writing for the NY Post (Ron Darling was writing articles for the Daily News).

Your recollection of his “Welcome to the AL East” is dead on as well. Stay tuned as I will be posting some of George’s prose in the next few weeks.
