Eddie Kranepool Society: Mets Radio Booth Still In Flux

Mets Police is not suggesting Steve Phillips is Jar-Jar Binks. It’s just a funny picture.

The first couple of innings with Lewin handling the play by play and Phillips the commentary were a very good listen. Then Lewin turned the play by play chores over to Phillips and it was a total disaster. Phillips spoke way too fast and his nervousness at the mike was quite evident (I believe he used the phrase “toed the rubber” 2,356 times) Phillips went from an solid analyst to bumbling fool.

I have jumped in on this on Twitter – I am actually turning the radio OFF when Steve is on.

Am I anti-Steve?  Not at all.

Someone needs to coach hi and tell him to SLOW DOWN.

He fills every second of space with words.  It’s a “let me show you how much I know about baseball, see here in the second inning of this early March game what the Mets want to do is play the infield in at the corners so that….” presentation.

Steve….apparently nobody is passing my tweets to you….take a breath.  Let the broadcast have space.  It’s a nice warm day in Florida.  You don’t have to start speaking the second Howie/Josh leaves you a window.  And slow down the delivery.  Listen to Howie’s cadence.  It’s an easy listen.  Your delivery so far has been HYPE.   Slow down and all will be fine.

I haven’t hear the play by play so I can’t comment.

  1. metspolice i dont get the overreaction to Phillips, sounds like it was a 3 game tryout with CJ Nitkowski next & Byrdak later in the spring

  2. Steve Phillips doesn’t have the skill sets for broadcast play-by-play, either.

  3. “TheRealHoov: metspolice that being said, he was essentially unlistenable.” Ha. It’s not an overreaction, it’s just a reaction.

  4. metspolice i was speaking in generalities among bloggers and tweeters alike. Hopefully it was those 3 games only.
