Dwight Gooden had 100 wins before his 25th birthday

Gooden

Kids, I know you get all excited when something good happens in Queens, but I really need to put things in perspective for you.  Today is Matt Harvey’s 25th birthday.  He’s groovy, we all like him.  He has 12 wins and is out for the year.

Now let’s take a look at Dwight Gooden who by age 25 had 100 wins.  One Hundred.

Starting at age 19 he had seasons of 17, 24, 17, 15, 18 and 9 wins.  He had a Cy Young and a ring.

So when I don’t get as excited as Generation Piazza about some things, this is why.  Please understand how great Doc was.  As exciting as half of last season was, you never saw anything as exciting as Dwight Gooden at home on a Friday night during this period.  Nothing.

I hope you get the chance some day.

Here’s to you Doc!

  1. .TheHappyRecap isn’t 100 amazing? That’s why I don’t get as excited as the younglings

  2. metspolice Its interesting to think if Doc was a phenom today, would he be given the opportunity to break in at such a young age?

  3. metspolice TheHappyRecap In Harvey’s defense, the mets held him back a year and he went out w/ injury in Aug. He’s also on awful teams.

  4. .TheHappyRecap nope they would protect his arm so they could win in 1987 and keep the 1994 budget down

  5. TheHappyRecap metspolice no! They’d put him on a ridiculous weight program and he’d get Tommy John!

  6. TheHappyRecap metspolice At age 20 (1985) he threw 276 IP. No way anyone even comes close to that today.

  7. .DoctorK4 yeah you start letting guys do that and you’ll never win a world series

  8. TheHappyRecap metspolice Even if it does prolong careers, would you rather see Doc pitch a CG in 1985 or some lame 5-inn start in his 40s?

  9. metspolice Gooden had less than 100 wins after 25yo and less than wins 50 after 30yo. Harvey will be better than that.

  10. .PositiveMetsFan you think Harvey is making up 100 wins on Doc starting at age 26???? Nope.
