This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The “5 Metal Songs That Best Describe The Mets Rebuilding Years” Edition

First off I would like to say it’s an honor for me be a part of the Mets Police family. I have been reading this site probably since late ’07 and I have been a fan of the diverse content – whether it has been Shannon’s railing on about the obscured views of Citi Field, the black uniforms …. or Mediagoon’s extensive jersey collection.

If you know me then you are aware that I have two major passions in my life. Those two passions are obviously the Mets and heavy metal music. When you think about it these two interests go together hand in hand, whether it was Mike Piazza coming to the plate with the strains of Iron Maiden’s “The Prisoner” blaring from the public announcement system or the fact that metal bands such as Twisted Sister, Exodus, Metallica have pledged their allegiance to this team whether by attending games or by wearing Mets gear during photo sessions.

But since the Mets epic back to back collapses in ’07 and ’08 coupled with the Madoff scandal there has been aura of doom and gloom along with the anger and feelings of disenfranchisement that is generally synonymous with the heavy metal genre.

So I have come up with a list of the five metaL/hardcore songs that best describe the this current Mets rebuilding era.

5. “Malfunction” by The Cro-Mags. This NYHC staple is the best comparison to the disconnect between the Mets ownership and their fan base with the classic lyrics “Maybe I’d be better off talking to a wall / because talking to you makes no sense at all !”

4. “5 Year Plan” by D.R.I. Because you know this rebuilding era has taken the better part of 5 years.

3. “Born To Lose” by Motorhead . This sums up the Jerry Manuel era in a nutshell.

2. “Years Of Decay” by Overkill.

and lastly “Season In The Abyss” by Slayer. What list wouldn’t be complete with Satan’s house band. This song encompasses the forlorn state of the Mets Fan’s psyche, helplessness, depression and all around anger at the state of the team.

I have to hope that this upcoming season will finally put us back in the post season – or at least back to some modicum of respectability. Do you agree ? Is there a song – or songs that you feel are a better representation ?

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!!

  1. I remember going to Shea on 9/27/08, tired of being very superstitious and doing strange things to help the Mets win–mostly for naught of course–so I took a different approach and dared the Mets to lose: on my way to the game I blasted Death Magnetic. It was quite therapeutic, actually. Now anytime I hear it, I think of Johan pitching like the anti-Glavine we wanted him to be. I’m happy I can share this with someone else who might get it.

Of course I attempted it again the next day to no avail.
