Ton Seaver Talks About His Wines (Post)

Speaking of Seaver, the Post interviewed The Franchise about his winery.

“I love the hands-on, the learning part of it. It’s a real thrill, and there are no airports and no airplanes,” said Seaver, 64. “My commute to work is 90 seconds on foot with my two Labrador retrievers. It’s a lot of work but I enjoy the work. A friend of mine told me, ‘The best fertilizer is the owner walking the vineyard rows.’ “

  1. I love Tom Seaver. I hated it when he and Gary Thorne would start discussing wine on-air. I love wine, too, don't get me wrong, but it's something I just don't want to hear about over and over again while watching a baseball game.

Based on those awful memories I respectfully decline to read Tom's latest wine dissertation.

I maintain to this day that Seaver's career as a broadcaster was forever ruined by his days in the booth with Phil Rizzuto. Rizzuto, FWIW, is a big reason that I became a Met fan instead of a Yankee fan. Growing up in Connecticut, I generally followed NY baseball on TV back in the day. No ESPN, no internet. Only live radio and TV broadcasts and sportsphone if you absolutely HAD to know immediately who won a game.

Rizzuto was an awful broadcaster, and on that basis it was easy to prefer the very-good Met broadcasters over the horrible Yankee ones.
