Thoughts about the Mets Hall of Fame announcement

Since Metsblog did a great job recapping what was said on the call, rather than type for typing sake I’ll send you over there…but since it’s right up my alley I want to comment.

I love that the Mets are having a ceremony on August 1st.  For me, that’s now a hot ticket.

The quotes Matt has from both Doc & Darryl about their regrets on their Met careers are priceless.  Straw is right that the biggest mistake he made was leaving the Mets.  Well, maybe not the biggest, he’s had some personal demons, but for purposes of Mets Policing, it sucked when he talked for years about how he couldn’t wait to be a Dodger, and then followed suit.

I don’t think you yougins can ever quite grasp how good Gooden was there at the start.  He was absolutely on his way to the Hall of Fame.  The Daily News one time ran a faux-future article about Doc’s 300th win (with career recaps).  If anyone has that or can find it online, that would be gold.  (Hey Bitter Bill, can you go down the hall and look in some archive?).  That he finished with under 200 wins is amazing.  He had 60 and 21 years old.

Cashen is a name you don’t hear these days, and placing him in the Hall and having a prominent hall and museum is a good way for Mets fans to know about names like that.   That’s why I’ve been harping on this stuff since I started this site.  You can’t expect some 15 year old Mets fan to know about these guys unless you tell them.  It looks like the Mets are doing a good job on this.

Today’s a good day in Flushing.

(still waiting for new blog host to take control of the site.  This process is as slow as Sid Fernandez pitching the second game of a doubleheader.   This is another reminder that the site might go down/look weird/look stupid for anywhere between two seconds and several hours depending on when they do it and how close I am to a computer when they do.)
