Time for a new blue Mets cap

I’ve decided the time has come to retire this cap. It has served me well since about 1998 (I’ll go down in the basement sometime this week and find its predecessor, I keep everything) but it just doesn’t work for me any longer.

See the “dents” – I don’t know how those got there but I can’t get them out.   Thus, when I wear the cap it looks sort of deformed.

The “stains” I bet are from chlorine long ago.  I’ve learned the hard way not to wear anything you care about when cleaning the pool.

I shopped around today and found one I liked (I think it’s called “franchise”) and some I didn’t.  I’ll dive into thatduring the week.  As for right now, I clicked on “Mets” at lids.com and must resist the temptation to do 50 posts about Mets caps.   Dinner is ready and Mrs. Mets Police is in a happy mood.   No blogging tonight.

  1. I got a Franchise cap last summer, and love it. It fits nicely, and unlike the official 5950s, the crown is of a lower, relaxed profile so it doesn’t stick up like a cardboard box on top of one’s head. An added bonus is the old-school blue button.

Be warned, though, this cap is more of a faded, “weathered” blue than you’ll find on a new 5950. It’s nothing over the top and looks fine, but the photos may not convey it unless you’re really paying attention.

    1. Sparks: Wow you nailed it. I kept looking at the 5950s and just didn’t like how they looked. Too rigid. The flat brim just isn’t my style. I think I will get the franchise. Plus they are cheaper.

  2. Yeah, Sparks. That’s pretty dead-on. I own a franchise cap too and I much prefer the look and feel of it to the 59Fifty. And I like that faded look… it makes it look worn-in. Also, the orange “Mets” script on the back is a nice touch.

  3. I put my hats on the top rack of an empty dishwasher. They come out clean and you can remold the brim while it is still wet. I leave it on the counter top until dry.

  4. Dude, go with the 5950 fitted! Its real! It looks good! Its what the Mets should basically wear during the 162 game season. Again, the Franchise is OK…but the 5950 can be molded if the brim bothers you too much. Get the Fitted! Ban the Hybrid at all costs!!!

  5. The brim on the 5950s will accept a curve without much effort.

What I don’t like about them is that crown is huge (especially on my size 7 head). I’m watching David Wright give an interview on “30 Teams in 30 Days” right now, and it looks like he’s wearing a Mets-themed Country Crock container on his head.

When I do buy a 5950, I invariably end up ripping out the black plastic webbing that holds up the front for that reason.

    1. I went fashion. I’m not saying I won’t get a 5950, but I might try that dishwasher trick on my existing one. I also kinda want to see if I can get mileage out of my cap from the 1970s.
