Another picture of the Shea Stadium scoreboard in 1965

Yesterday in the comments we were discussing the Shea Stadium scoreboard in 1965, and those of us who weren’t around yet are fascinated by the “video screen” that was atop the scoreboard.

Jesse sent this picture over, that’s a band called The Beatles who were quite popular in the 1960s.   You may have heard of their bass player Paul McCartney, who played a concert at Citi Field in 2009.  Anyways, check out the scoreboard – the screen is where the Mets logo is.

  1. A quick little history lesson concerning the video screen..it never worked the way it was supposed to. the technology was just not there yet in the early 60’s. also during the day you could not even see it due to the sun etc. during the season they decieded to call it a day and cover it up with the mets logo. there are only a few pictures floating around showing the video screen in use and only at night. however, the colored lights around the scoreboard lit up the shell very nicely and that lasted into the mid to late 70’s.

  2. Great pic. Just to be clear I got that pic by googling “Shea stadiun scoreboard 1964”. Think there are others pics of the same concert. Whoever took those pics really got a great piece of music (and baseball) history on film.
