As Mets fans, we are proud of the great announcers we’ve had over years – from Nelson/Kiner/Murphy (and there’s supposedly a mural in the new Hall of Fame, see last night’s item) to Tim McCarver in his prime (maybe we’ll skip over the Howie/Rusty/Fran Healy FSNYyears) and to the presently awesome Howie on the radio and the great TV troika.
However…I propose to you that the greatest play by play call in Mets history was done by Vin Scully.
Here comes Knight…
Is there a better call in Mets history? Does anyone know what Bob Murphy’s call of the same play sounds like?
Here’s the TV call of the Mets winning in 1969. It’s a perfectly fine call, surely better than somebody yelling thhhhuuu meetttts  winnnn but it lacks the audio emotion of Scully’s.
Murph’s call is equally as epic.
“and a ground ball, trickling, it is a fair ball–GETS BY BUCKNER!!! Rounding third Knight! The Mets will win the ballgame! The Mets win! They win!!!”
Wow now that you type it I can hear it in my mind! It has somehow been a while since I heard that call. That is a great call. I will change my vote to NO, Scully’s is not the best. That’s why we talk about these things!
Are you kidding me? Murph’s call is a classic and far superior!!!
Yea, i never ever associate this play with Scully at all. Maybe its because I have watched the “1986 New York Mets: A Year To Remember” video 800,000 times and the Murphy call is what they use but Murphy’s call overall describes the play so much better
I have a transcript of Bob Murphy and Gary Thorne from this play.

I was thinking though of Bob Murphy’s call of the final out of Game 7 as the best.
All I know is that all 3 original Mets announcers needs to be honored at Citi Field with some sort of statue or something. More than any player we grew up with these personalities and voices. Nelson was a known national voice, Murphy a baseball announcer who worked with Gowdy and Kiner an ex player who with a healthy back, and playing on good teams would probably hit over 600 HRS.
Seems like there’s a mural of the 3 announcers in the new museum.
Corey has tweeted that he’s at the museum now and has pics!
I originally had a post for tomorrow about a Murphy statue but pulled it once I heard about the mural. I’ll re-tool it down the road.
I want Murphy to have the best pbp call in Mets history!
Who remembers Murphy as host of Bowling for Dollars on channel 9?
i remember the show but don’t remember who hosted. Great show. Stick that on SNY and make Howie host it. Much better than certain hosts and their filler show.
No luck finding audio without spending forever looking. Bryan Hoch on the original Mets.com used to have an entire library of these things.
Here’s a transcript of the entire half-inning:

Murph’s entire inning was the best PBP call ever IMO. When I worked at FAN I had to send a tape of the entire inning to someone and we all were huddled around a machine listening to it and were like “WOW! Murph was so on!”
With Wilson at the plate, “And now my friends, the Mets are down to their final strike.”
The video “1986 a year to remember” has it all captured perfectly.
I also think the transcript has it wrong. Thorne was just as good in the inning with his line “And the Red Sox are standing in stunned disbelief.”
Or at least that’s how I remember it.
Murphy’s call on Mookies grounder is my cell phone ringtone…..this really annoys people since I live in Massachusetts !!
Murphs is great too.
I had a record album LP from 1970, the year after the Mets won.
ON that record were many awesome calls by the trio.
I wish I could get a new copy of it somehow or other.
I have the one from the Knicks 69-70 but he Mets version is gone.
Both are equally amazing…
Wow never heard of such an LP. Will have to look.
