Mets fans are going to boo Wright now?

What has happened to the Mets fanbase?

This week I notice the trendy thing to do is boo David Wright. David Wright.

I understand the argument that “I paid my money, I’ll boo who I want!”

David Wright?

A guy makes a horrible error against the Yankees and you want to let him have it, I get it.

A free agent signs a big contract and strikes out three times a night, I might understand it. I am surpised it hasn’t started yet.

Ollie lines up on Opening Day and gets booed? Can you at least give him a chance to stink?

This week, the face of the Mets gets booed?

When should we turn on Ike Davis? What was with him striking out last night? Bum! When does Murphy get back? Boooo!!

I spent the last two years being the leader of the cranks and now I’m finding that some people are finding me not negative enough. Holy cow, that’s scary!

David Wright?

At that point why even be a Mets fan?

Something has changed in Flushing. I feel like these guys would have booed 1983 Tom Seaver and his crappy 9-13 record.

  1. it’s not because Wright’s playing bad (anyone can play bad). It’s because he should have stepped up to be the team’s captain and leader, like Keith Hernandez was, and he’s not.

  2. He is the leader, and is being held back by Manuel.

but he’s still the leader. I wrote a post about it just before the season started, and I still believe formally acknowledging it would go a long way to making his leadership more respected, and less relient on a dificient manuel.

  3. I agree completely. The booing is out of hand in NYC. Just because something is your right doesn’t make it right to do it.

NYers need to get a grip.

Booing is a result of not believing. A lot of Mets fans (myself included at times) haven’t felt they have a team to believe in. Unfortunately this comes through in booing.

While David Wright may be the captain, he’s not leading the team. This isn’t a knock in Wright. what the Mets need is the emotional leader (not always the same as the captain) that gets fired up, that gets in other players’ faces and challenges them to step up.

  5. Booing David Wright is insane. But at the end of the day, if you drop hard earned money down you can boo and cheer whoever you want.

  6. The Mets were WINNING when wright was booed. That’s how insane it’s gotten. Not “leading” the team? That is the biggest load of justification crap I have ever heard. Really? Now? After all these months? It has nothing to do with his lack of production in the 3 spot? Please, if you’re going to defend the people who boo, at least be honest about it and say they’re booing because right now Wright isn’t hitting the outside pitch. It’s equally indefensible, but at least it’s honest.

  7. Yes if you pay your money you are free to boo anyone you wish. All I ask is if you are going to boo Wright or Santana please just wear your Yankee apparel so we all know what type of “fan” you are.

  8. I don’t support booing players on your own team. But why should David Wright still be getting a pass just for being David Wright?

  9. With all the booing I am starting to feel like I am at a WWE event. They boo the faces there and cheer the heel(villain).

  10. With all the booing I am starting to feel like I am at a WWE event. They boo the faces there and cheer the heel(villain).

    1. Good analogy. Other similarities: everybody has a theme song to enter to; most managers seem to interfere with their team, more than they help; PEDs are used (I’ll stick to “are” until I really believe the ML testing program is catching/preventing a majority of the ‘cheats’); and both lean more on the entertainment aspects, these days.

  11. “With all the booing I am starting to feel like I am at a WWE event.”

They already have entrance music for every player. All they need is the pyrotechnics when they leave the dugout. Pretty soon we’ll have players taking the mic between innings to talk trash to each other. Maybe they can have wright do a heel turn and feud with Reyes, who will start wearing a mask.

  12. maybe it’s because he is 3 for 20 (.150) in the last 5 games with nine strikeouts. those Ks are a legitimate cause for concern and they tell me that despite having 3 homers he is still pressing like he did for much of last year.

  13. Booing anyone 2 weeks into the season is ridiculous (well, unless they’re just straight-up loafing or you’re dealing with a long-term bust resuming the sorriness where he left off the year before, say Heilman blowing his first save opportunity of the year), but I do agree that David Wright shouldn’t get special treatment just for being David Wright.

The Seaver comparison is a bit much. If Wright had a ROY, 3 Cy Youngs, 2 pennants, and a world championship in his pocket, he’d be bulletproof, too.

  14. The booing is out of hand. Boo a guy when he loafs, doesn’t put forth the effort or does something stupid (for example, when a fielder argues a call without calling time and a runner scores). Don’t boo just because you bought a ticket and the guy grounded out. He’s a .300 career hitter, he’s leading the Majors in walks (and on pace for more than 200) and picking it like a Gold Glover at third. If he’s pressing at the plate, that’s HoJo’s domain — he needs to get Wright to make adjustments. I love HoJo, but I’m not sure he’s a good hitting coach.

I would love for this team to vote Wright as their captain. He can’t assume the captain’s role, it has to be bestowed upon him. I hope it is.

  15. Manuel’s too threatened by the idea of Wright being named captain, which is why he’s not doing it.

But he’s a captain (and I wrote this earlier this season) whether he’s got the C or not.

      1. @sparks is that question directed at me? Wright was booed when I was there Tuesday, and I believe he was booed Monday. Bondy also has written about it in the News.

  16. just to chime in, no one can speculate based on what happens in the clubhouse. no one is there and it doesn’t give anyone a right to make assumptions.

as for booing, it’s simple: you boo david wright, you’re an idiot. sorry. but it’s the truth. if you’re booing your team, outside of a guy completely showing no effort, you’re an idiot. this “i spent my money” garbage isn’t legitimate. just because i spend my money at the grocery store doesn’t mean i get to be a jerk to the cashier, even if she’s bagging my stuff a little slow. do you think booing makes david wright go, “gee, maybe i should just get a hit next time.” there’s a reason people like playing in places like st. louis. it’s because they’re knowledgeable baseball fans AND they SUPPORT their team no matter what.

a ton of mets fans have become hybrids of stupid and ignorant yankees and phillies fans. i’ve said it before and i’l lsay it again: don’t like the team? the players? then drive 12 miles south and enjoy corporate america and boo all you like.

  17. It’s all about frustration with the two blown years, the injury year, and the management (or lack thereof).

But to boo Wright? C’mon…it’s like booing the American flag.

That’s why I’m afraid if they ever ressurect banner day, a good number of banners would not be allowed to participate.

As a transplanted New Yorker living in New England the past 20 years, it sort of reminds me of the pre-04 Sox fan. Perpetual dissatisfaction.

    1. Frank that’s a good question. Would people do negative banners? I don’t recall any from my youth. I don’t know if there was a screening process.

If the Mets do bring it back, Banner Day should be a positive event not a complain-fest.

  18. Lets clear something up here David Wright is a player for The Mets not “The Mets”.So let the fans do as they please for they are the reason this club is still in Queens.
Truth is David wright was in a “slump”(hopefully the LA series changed this)and this team has not seen post season action since 2006. Let me remind those who seem to forget he batted .160 in that NLCS vs. the Cards and played horrible that whole post season.
If you people wanna give a guy the “Big C” for not coming through when we as fans need him the most. Then I question your loyalty to this club. The fact is these people are at least at the game to Boo this guy(attendance has not been great)So why not complain about the lack of Fans attending while the team was sub 500. Ask yourselves one question are you in love with his style of play…or his face.

  19. In general, I don’t boo (I have been know to make an exception or two on occasion for select members of the Philles or whenever the Rangers are playing the Penguins), it’s just bad karma. Maybe, if it’s apparent they they just aren’t trying. An out they could’ve made if they had thrown just a little harder, a base they could’ve stolen if they had run a bit faster. I can understand if someone wants to boo that particular play.

But to boo someone on a team you claim to be a fan of when they come up to bat? How does that help? How bout cheering to help him break the slump, or just staying silent? To me booing means “I don’t want you to do well” Don’t boo your team.
