23 of the 25 ex Met players who managed. Maybe.

In yesterday’s post-game notes the Mets mentioned that Juan Samuel is the 25th former Mets player to manage. John has compiled our collective efforts into the list below.

I don’t know the answer, and unclear if Mike Cubbage should count or if Wally Backman’s “time” with Arizona counts. Someone added Jose Oquendo but nine of us can remember it. Maybe LaRussa took a day off? Here’s what we got. Someone wake up the Faith & Fear guys, they’ll know.

Anyways, some off-day fun.

1. Joe Torre
2. Juan Samuel
3. Rod Gardenhire
4. Gil Hodges
5. Jay Gibbons
6. Bobby V
7. Roger Craig
8. Jim Fregosi
9. Don Zimmer
10. Bruce Bochy
11. Clint Hurdle
12. Lee Mazzili
13. Ray Knight

  1. Cubbage managed 7 games for Mets, he should
count! Wally got fired before managing any
games, so he doesn’t count (IMHO). Oquendo
managed the WBC’s Puerto Rico team, but his
only MLB managerial experience was he finished
one game as acting mgr. when LaRussa got tossed, so he doesn’t count. Add Ken Boyer
and that makes 24! Anyone got the 25th?

  2. I agree Jose Oquendo shouldn’t count. Cubbage has to count because he was an interim manager.
