Flushing, December 1978:
“Well, that was a disaster.”
“What should we put on the yearbook? Â We got rid of Koosman. and Torre will never amount to anything.”
“How about Richie Hebner?”
“Hebner? Â Ha! Â I’d rather put nothing on the cover! Â Raise the price a quarter too.”
“Another quarter? Â We just raised it last year! Â That’s another 20% gain! Â We had a lousy season, and the Yankees have won back to back World Series!”
“Just do it. Â Mets fans are idiots. Â They’ll come out to Shea no matter what we put on the field. Â I bet we could change the team colors and nobody would notice! Â You think they’re gonna stop coming? Â We own this town. Â It’s not like we’d ever draw under 800,000. Â Raise it! Â Did you order the mule yet?!”
