Howie should do a game solo

Good morning Mets fans,

It’s all quiet in Flushing. The Internet is quiet which means Adam Rubin will score big with part 2 of his Meet the Mess series.

Days like these are when crazy ideas sometimes cut through so I will float one:

Howie Rose should do a game alone.

Why?

Why not.

Howie is the best in the business this side of Vin Scully, and Vin works alone – so why not let Howie try it?

Just give Wayne a day off.

Make an event out of it.

This season feels endless. For the first time in a long long time I find myself searching for things to write about. Without the storylines of old stadium/new stadium things are just boring.

There’s just nothing to be excited about right now, and there are still 5 weeks to go.

The good news is that I have been doing this long enough to know that these are the days when major Mets chaos tends to erupt. Don’t be surprised to see an Omar vs Rubin type story from nowhere appear.

  1. I’ll be rooting for Omar in that case.

I’ll be at the game tonight though.

You set it up perfectly though. Talk of Howie doing a game solo would spawn “Mets are broke and don’t want to pay two radio hosts” stories.

  2. Before I even heard of the Fire Wayne movement, I noticed that Howie or whoever works with him rarely engages him in conversation…Wayne makes a point and the other guy goes onto a new subject…listen for it, it’s funny.

  3. I have not listened to a Met radio broadcast since Murph left! LOL So I can’t comment on who is working the games with Howie.

I am however in the broadcasting business (Technical, I worked in enemy territory this weekend doing the Mariner vs Yanks series for FSN) and I can tell you that doing a radio broadcast by yourself is probably one of the hardest tasks in the business. No one to play off of, No one to fill in those blank moments and it can make the broadcast quite boring unless you have the talent of a Murphy and Scully to pull it off.

I’m not saying Howie doesn’t have the juice here (he’s one of the better booth guys we have had) but I would hate to see the criticism he might endure and eventual firing just because they are not capable of getting someone decent to work with him.

They got the TV booth cooking good so I don’t see why they can’t just find another good guy to work with Howie.

  4. Howie by himself would be very funny…lots of Honeymooners jokes I bet.

What are the Mets batting with runners on base?…Norton: A hundred and eleven

  5. The last few times I’ve listened to any part of a Mets game on WFAN, it almost felt like Wayne Hagin was doing the game on his own.

He never really let Howie or Ed Coleman have a much of a chance to get a word in.
