Who is the Mets ace now?

Roll with me for a second.  It’s 2011 Opening Day and Santana isn’t ready.

Who gets the ball?

Game One of the Wally Backman Era.

A 36 year old knuckler?

Mike Pelfrey?

Future Hall of Famer Jon Niese?

Oliver Perez?  Dillon Gee?  Pat Misch? Jenrry Mejia? Hisonari Takahashi?  Any of  these free agents?

How do you market this?  I know I’m an emotional Mets fan but this morning all I see 2011 reminding me of 1978.

  1. Well, let’s hope Big Pelf gives us hope today, that he could be the ace NEXT year we all thought he’d be at the beginning of THIS year.

and just as an aside…if anyone’s looking for a good “You Own This Jersey”…I’ll be sporting my pinstripe Paul LoDuca jersey to the game today…

    Let’s Go Mets?

  2. Dickey & Niese, they may not have the career or numbers of an ace, but I do not think at this point anyone can argue that they have the cajones of one. And on this team, that is saying something.

  3. I’d bite the bullet on 2011, slash ticket prices & increase promotions. Sell the home-grown talent & wait for some of the bad contracts to come off the books.

R.A. Dickey would be my pre-spring training pick to start on Opening Day.

  4. Obviously depends on Spring, but Pelf wouldn’t be a bad choice. Unless you’d prefer not to pitch a supposed ground ball pitcher on fake grass in Puerto Rico
