One thing Wally has that the others don’t is an ability to look guys in the eye and explain that he won here.
I’m pulling for Backman though I wouldn’t be upset if Hale got the job. Something about Collins and Melvin that just doesn’t get me excited at all. Maybe it’s that underdog role that the Mets are typically so good at.
If Tuesday rolls around and we’re seeing Collins or Melvin up there, it’s the off-season equivalent of strike three looking, Mr. Beltran…
This is a team badly in need of some motivation, and a motivator.
As an analogy, would Francis Ford Coppola have been smart for avoiding Marlon Brando for Apocalypse Now and the Godfather, because Marlon has a reputation for being UNPREDICTABLE, etc.? Not a mellow sort? You treat ‘the man’ differently because he’s the man. You make allowances, and you tell the PR staff to back off when the going gets tough over some meltdown.
